The love story of Alden and Yaya Dub has reached its 37 Weeksary, which millions of fans celebrated this week across social media. But there is a much bigger event on the horizon for the Philippines noontime drama, one that could rival the success of last year’s live Tamang Panahon special.

AlDub stars Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza announced this week that they will be planning a major project for the show’s anniversary in July. It started out quietly as a love story that budded during the show’s KalyeSeyre segment between viral video star Maine Mendoza and handsome actor Alden Richards.

“Actors and actresses are often paired up so fans hope they end up together in real life. But what’s different about ‘AlDub’… is that it wasn’t just the creation of a TV network or movie production,” TV host and blogger Daphne Osena Paez told BBC News last year of the AlDub phenomenon.

Now there could be the biggest event ever in the works, Richards and Mendoza revealed (via PhilStar).

“Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza announced that they’re preparing for an anniversary project this July.

“‘Mayro’n po kaming surprise sa buong AlDub Nation,’ Alden announced when they were launched as Bench endorsers, Philippine Entertainment Portal reported.

“He even hinted that the project is ‘something everyone has been waiting for.'”

It’s not clear what the anniversary special will involve, but it’s likely to be a combination of Richards singing and some live action between the stars. In the Tamang Panahon special the two shared their first live kiss, and the anniversary could include some other memorable firsts.

The popular noontime show has now turned into a global phenomenon, one that often takes over Twitter. The show’s enthusiastic fans make the daily hashtags go viral frequently and even set Twitter’s all-time record with 41 million tweets for the Tamang Panahon special.

The pair have also become a marketing force, with dozens of advertisers joining in. The Inquirer noted that Maine and Richards now pitch for more than 40 different brands.

“In just seven months since its debut on TV in July 2015, AlDub’s combined earnings have reached P200 million—based on conservative estimates by sources interviewed by Inquirer Lifestyle.

“Alden commands a higher amount than Maine, a source who requested anonymity said: ‘Mga P5 million si Alden, P1.5 million si Maine.’

“Those figures, according to the source, became standard rates after AlDub’s series of McDonald’s TV ads were enthusiastically received by the public.

“For Alden’s 555 Carne Norte and Maine’s 555 Sardines endorsements, each was paid ‘definitely seven figures,’ said another source. ‘The rates were reasonable, relative to their popularity.'”

The popularity is thanks largely to the chemistry between Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza, which has actually led many fans to believe that they are dating in real life. The two have been a bit coy about it but said there is nothing going on off-screen.
