New Amazon Prime Movies, TV, And Originals April 2016: ‘Catastrophe’ Season 2, Classic Woody Allen, ‘Batman,’ And More

Amazon Prime, the free streaming service, rolls out an impressive roster of new movies, TV shows, and even a couple of Amazon Studios original series in April, a roster that ranges from such big screen classics as The Coen Brothers’ brilliant and dark comedy The Big Lebowski to the second season of the HBO political satire Veep — just in time for campaign season — to a revival of the beloved 1960s Saturday morning show Thunderbirds Are Go!

Yes, Thunderbirds Are Go!, which first aired on British TV in 1965 under the title Thunderbirds, has been born again 50 years after the last original episode aired. But unlike the 1960s version of the show, the new Amazon Prime series of Thunderbirds Are Go! features CGI animation, rather than string-controlled marionettes.

Watch the trailer for the new Amazon Prime Thunderbirds Are Go! in the video below.

There are a few other differences as well, according to the show’s creators.

“There are 100% less martinis — and no smoking,” said the show’s head writer Rob Hoegee. “The original series was a product of its time. It was Mad Men with rescue ships.”

Also on the list of Amazon Prime originals — though the show actually airs on Britain’s Channel 4 — is the second season of Catastrophe, a quirky romantic comedy starring Rob Delaney and Sharon Horgan as an unlikely couple forced together when a one-night stand leads to an unexpected pregnancy.

The trailer for Season 2 of Catastrophe can be seen in the video below.

Catastrophe goes online on Amazon Prime April 8, while Thunderbirds Are Go! fans will need to hang in there until April 15.

But the biggest day on the Amazon Prime April calendar is the first of the month, where a slate of classic movies premieres on the streaming service. In addition to cult classic The Big Lebowski, a pair of Woody Allen’s best films, released 18 years apart, also debut.

Bananas, a slapstick satire with Woody Allen as an unlikely South American revolutionary that came out in 1971, debuts at the same time as Crimes and Misdemeanors — a grim drama about guilt and responsibility, released in 1989.
