Burger King Unveils ‘Angriest Whopper’

Burger King has unveiled the Angriest Whopper, which features a hot sauce-infused red bun, jalapeños, and a spicy “angry sauce.” Although it has more than 800 calories and more than 1500 mg of sodium, the fast-food giant hopes the sandwich will be hit with customers who appreciate a unique, and spicy, burger.

In their announcement, which was made via social media, Burger King calls the Angriest Whopper the sequel to the original Angry Whopper.

The Angry Whopper, which is still available in some locations, debuted in the United States in 2008. With manchego cheese, angry onion petals, jalapeños, bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, and a flame-grilled beef patty, the spicy burger remains a favorite among Burger King Customers.

As reported by Advertising Age, the Angry Whopper is one of several spicy items added to Burger King’s classic menu in recent years. The specialty items, which include buffalo and firey chicken fries, are credited with helping the fast-food giant increase sales in the fourth quarter of 2015.

Burger King expects the Angriest Whopper to further increase sales beginning March 31.

The debut commercial, which was shared on Burger King’s Facebook page, features images of an erupting volcano and a burger with a bright red bun surrounded by flames. The narrator promises customers “the Angriest Whopper ever.”

According to the official Burger King website, the Angriest Whopper “consists of savory flame-grilled beef, piled high with thick-cut bacon, American cheese, iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, angry onion petals, jalapeños, creamy mayonnaise and spicy angry sauce all layered between a red bun that has hot sauced baked in.”

Although it sounds tempting, the Angriest Whopper is not exactly healthy. The spicy burger has 34 grams of protein. However, it also has 830 calories, 59 grams of carbohydrates, 17 grams of sugar, 51 grams of fat, 115 mg of cholesterol, and 1530 mg of sodium.

Burger King also notes the Angriest Whopper contains allergens including egg and milk and that it is “prepared in fryer used for products containing wheat [and] soy.”

The suggested price for an individual Angriest Whopper is $5.49, and a small combo will cost around $7.49. In contrast, the original Angry Whopper debuted at $3.69 in 2009, and the Halloween Whopper was $4.99.

Last year, Burger King unveiled a Halloween Whopper — which had a black bun that was infused with A.1. Thick and Hearty sauce. Although the unique burger was popular during the Halloween season, customers took to social media with a disturbing complaint.

Washington Post reports the black buns had an unusual side-effect. Numerous customers lodged complaints that the Halloween Whopper turned customers’ “poop bright green.”

Although it was never confirmed, the issue was likely caused by a combination of dyes added to the buns to achieve the unnaturally dark hue.

Burger King’s Angriest Whopper features an unusually bright red bun. However, it is unclear whether the dyes will produce the same results customers saw with the Halloween Whopper.

It is unclear how long the Angriest Whopper will remain on Burger King’s menu, as it is a limited-time offer. Like many limited-time items, it will likely remain on the menu for several months.

Business Insider reports Burger King recently debuted 100 percent beef grilled hot dogs, which are available as a Classic Grilled Dog and a Chili Cheese Grilled Dog. During the February launch event, Alex Macedo, Burger King’s North America president, said the fast-food giant wants “this to be the Whopper of hot dogs… the Whopper is America’s favorite burger — we want this to be America’s favorite hot dog.”

Burger King’s Angriest Whopper is not entirely healthy. However, the company hopes customers will embrace the uniquely spicy new burger.
