George Zimmerman, the man who shot unarmed Florida teen Trayvon Martin on February 26th and was later arrested after a large outcry, several protests and intense interest in the case on social media sites, has a website shilling for donations from people to help pay his legal costs because generally when you are not a cop and you shoot someone, a trial ensues.

While George Zimmerman insists the shooting was in self-defense, many have seen the shooting as racially motivated. And in the wake of the many demonstrations and heavy coverage of the killing, the Zimmerman family has endured some amount of public criticism.

Zimmerman, shortly before his arrest, created a website to collect donations — and many people opened their wallets to pay for his defense. But now Zimmerman’s parents say they need money too, as their lives have changed since their son gunned down a teenager on a Florida streetcorner.

To read the words of George Zimmerman’s parents, one might almost forget that a teen has died, his parents still grieving, because they make such a case for their own suffering in wading through the aftermath of the shooting their son engaged in that left Trayvon Martin dead, in the street, for the crime of walking home in his father’s neighborhood:

The site, hosted at robertandgladys.com, assures readers that the Zimmermans have fully accepted that their life has been altered since their son shot someone — but it is very hard for them, they say:

“We fully realize that the peaceful, secure life we once knew is now just a memory. Therefore, I am providing a link for those supporters who would like to leave us a personal message or contribute to our greatly increased living expenses, and our eventual relocation.”

With an amazing lack of irony, the Zimmermans say:

“Secondly, I am very often asked ‘How are you doing?’, ‘How are you holding up?’, or similar questions by concerned friends and acquaintances. How we are doing is unimaginable. Gladys and I have planned and worked hard our entire married life (36 years) in order that someday we would be able to spend some quality, peaceful time together in our retirement years. Our dreams ended on February 26th.”

The Zimmermans also make reference to the “highly orchestrated” events following the shooting. Do you find the online begging from the Zimmermans to be distasteful?
