Aly Raisman had the third-highest score at the end of the all-around women’s gymnastics competition at the 2012 London Olympics, but she still ended up walking away without an Olympic medal. The US captain tied for third place with Russia’s Aliya Mustafina, but after a scorecard tie-breaker, Mustafina stepped up to the podium while Raisman tried to hold her head high.

Raisman said:

“I’m trying to stay positive about it. Of course it’s a huge bummer, but I’m still fourth in the world, so that’s something to be proud of. It is what it is.”

Yahoo Sports reports that the bronze medal winner was determined by a scorecard tie-breaker. Raisman and Mustafina had their lowest scores dropped and the points were recounted. Both gymnasts had their worst scores on the beam (Raisman – 14.200 and Mustafina -13.633) and since Mustafina’s highest three scores were better than Raisman’s, Mustafina took home the bronze medal.

Raisman said:

“I was hoping that they were going to give both of us the bronze… It wasn’t until I came back (to the interview area) that a media person told me I had finished fourth on a count-back. I was definitely really sad. I knew it said I was fourth on the scoreboard, but the scores were exactly the same.”

Despite Raisman’s devastating loss, the young gymnast won’t be going home empty handed as the US Women’s Gymnastics Team took home the Gold Medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
