For the last few weeks, the battle over gay rights has been centered around the chicken sandwich. After Dan Cathy, CEO of Chick-Fil-A, made his views about gay rights clear last month, eating at the restaurant has become a political statement. Well, yesterday, on Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day, plenty of people showed up to eat chicken while simultaneously casting a vote against gay rights.

The restaurant didn’t release any exact numbers, but Steve Robinson, Chick-fil-A’s executive vice president of marketing, said that it was a record-setting day.

Robinson said:

“While we don’t release exact sales numbers, we can confirm reports that it was a record-setting day. We are very grateful and humbled by the incredible turnout of loyal Chick-fil-A customers on August 1 at Chick-fil-A restaurants around the country… We congratulate local Chick-fil-A Owner/Operators and their team members for striving to serve each and every customer with genuine hospitality.”

Mike Huckabee, who started Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day last month with a Facebook post, said that the American people were “voting” for the biblical idea of marriage by eating at Chick-Fil-A.

Huckabee said:

“People are voting with their feet today. I guess you could also say they are voting with their faces, they are stuffing them with chicken sandwiches, those lovely Chicken sandwiches from Chick-fil-A.”

Chick-Fil-A’s record-setting day shows that much of the country is still against gay marriage. But the battle over Chick-Fil-A sandwiches has also seen strong support from the other side. Several Mayors have stated that they would not allow the restaurant to build new restaurants in their cities, the Jim Henson Company has cut its business ties with the restaurant and a same-sex kiss in was also organized to protest Chick-Fil-A. 

Do you eat Chick-Fil-A? Do you think eating at the restaurant symbolizes your support for traditional marriage? Instead, people should probably avoid the restaurant due to America’s growing obesity problem.
