‘Veep’: Season 5 Trailer Features All The Thrills Of A Tied Election

Viewers of HBO‘s hit political comedy Veep will remember all too well the explosive finale of the show’s fourth season, which saw the show’s incumbent president Selina Meyer tied in a shock election result. It was a finale that left Veep viewers wondering exactly where the series would head next. If you’re one of those viewers, HBO has released a brand new trailer for Veep Season 5, and it provides us with a glimpse of what’s to come for the series and the future of Selina Meyer’s presidency.

According to SlashFilm, the new trailer for Veep captures the very essence of what makes this show fantastic. Veep tells the story of President Selina Meyer (formerly Vice President) and her team of incompetent staff as they struggle with the day to day challenges of running a country. Unlike the optimistic outlook of government that shows such as Parks and Recreation provide, Veep centres itself around pessimism and the inability to get anything done in government. It’s a theme that long term showrunner Armando Iannucci has carried through four different seasons of the show, before passing the baton onto David Mandel for the fifth season of the Veep.

In the first full-length trailer for Veep‘s fifth season, we’re given a glimpse of exactly where the series is heading following that aforementioned shock election result. In the trailer, we see Selina Meyer in the short period following the election waiting to get a better picture of her political fate.

However, according to NME, that’s not the only theme that will dominate the brand new season of Veep. Whilst dealing with a tied election, Selina’s team of inept staff will also have to tackle an economic crisis, along with international troubles. This will be the second season that sees Selina Meyer, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus in the top job as President of the United States and it looks like she’ll be truly getting her hands dirty with presidential business throughout the course of this series.

Fans of the past four seasons of Veep will be pleased to hear that Season 5 is packed with that same gritty wit and humour that viewers of Veep have come to love. There was concern that this season would struggle to pick up smoothly from the last series of Veep, as long term showrunner Armando Iannucci gave up his position to David Mandel. Iannucci is, of course, best known for his work on the hit British political sitcom, The Thick of It, a show which draws close parallels to Veep.

The new trailer also provides us with a glimpse of many favourite returning characters, that have already featured prominently in previous seasons of Veep. However, also thrown into the mix is a few new characters set to join Selina Meyer’s team.

What’s interesting about this season of Veep is the fact that it’ll be running alongside the ongoing presidential election. Veep in the past hasn’t drawn many parallels to the actual political landscape, but we’d still expect this series to poke fun at America’s electoral system, especially before it could face a tied result of its own. However, as pointed out by Vanity Fair, an incompetent female president gracing our TV screens might not play out all too well for Hillary Clinton, who is currently hoping to become the country’s first real female president.

Season 5 of Veep will premiere alongside Game of Thrones and Silicon Valley on April 24, which is set to be a huge night of television for HBO. Fans of the show will be waiting with baited breath to assess David Mandel’s performance as Veep‘s new showrunner and learn of the future of Selina Meyer.
