‘Force Awakens’ Star, John Boyega, Is Unconvinced A Han Solo Film Is A Good Idea

As more news about the new Han Solo film is released, opinions about the new film continue to be mixed. Although some are excited to see a film focused just on Solo, others are not sure it’s the best idea. In an exclusive interview with Metro.co.uk, The Force Awakens star John Boyega reveals he’s not entirely convinced a Han Solo film is necessary.

“Is that real?” Boyega asked. “They’re doing a Han Solo standalone film? I don’t know. I mean it’s strange for me to even imagine it. I mean I’m going to go see it whoever it is man, just know…I’m going to be honest man, I’m going to go with Harrison [Ford’s] reaction. Good luck, mate!”

Boyega is referring to Ford’s own response to the Han Solo film back in December.

When Reuters asked about who Ford thought should be cast for one of his most iconic roles Ford stated, “I don’t think it’s about being like me, it’s about us being like Han Solo.”

Ford continued by stating, “I’m sure whoever is responsible for that film, and I’m not, will think through the issues and problems of doing such a thing…Let’s make them responsible for those questions you might think to ask me because I’m not involved.”

Disney stated the standalone Han Solo film would show how Han Solo becomes the smuggler Luke Skywalker later befriends and Princess Leia falls in love with in the original Star Wars film. Metro.co.uk reports the film will be directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, directors of The Lego Movie and the Jump Street films. The script has been written by Star Wars screenwriting veteran Lawrence Kasdan and his son, Jon Kasdan.

The Han Solo film is part of a long list of Star Wars films Disney has slated for the next few years. Although filming for the Han Solo film isn’t supposed to start until January 2017, it’s rumored the search for a new Solo is happening quickly so the new Solo can make an appearance in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is due to come out in December. According to Tech Times, Rogue One will explain how the Rebellion got the Death Star plans in A New Hope. Maybe the new Han Solo will appear to retrieve the plans at the end of this film?

Currently, the short list of actors for the Han Solo role includes Miles Teller (Allegiant), Alden Ehrenreich (Beautiful Creatures), Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction) and Taron Egerton (Kingsman). Teller recently admitted he auditioned for the role and Taron Egerton even stated he’d “kill” to play Han Solo on The Jonathan Ross Show yesterday.

No matter who gets the role, they shouldn’t expect any advice from the original Han Solo.

When asked if he’d provide any tips on how to be the new Han Solo, Ford told Reuters, “No, I’m not going to do that.”

As the search continues for the new Han Solo it’s unclear when a selection will be made but fans and industry veterans alike have their own opinions on who would be perfect for the role.

Whoever wins the role will have some big shoes to fill and not just with the fans. Will the new Han Solo become best buds with John Boyega just like Harrison Ford has? Who do you think should be the new Han Solo? Let us know in the comments below.
