‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Predicted The Death Of McDreamy Way Back In Season 1, Plus Is Meredith Finally Ready For Love?

Meredith Grey has been put through the wringer. Last season on Grey’s Anatomy, fans witnessed the struggling marriage between her and Derek Shepard finally smooth out, to a certain degree, only to have their world come crashing back down.

At the end of the season, fans watched in horror as Derek Shepherd died in Season 11 of Grey’s Anatomy— a fate that fans are still trying to wrap their heads around. It was a sudden and definitely an unexpected way to lose of one of the show’s staple characters that since has left other characters, and fans alike, reeling.

After all, his death did cause quite the tension between his wife, Meredith Grey, and his sister, Amelia Shepherd — a giant kink that otherwise could’ve been avoided if Meredith would’ve paid more attention to Derek and his death wishes in Season 1. That’s what one fan wants everyone to believe anyway. But was Derek’s death really foreshadowed way back in Season 1? Is that even possible?

According to Cosmopolitan, the distinct theory was crafted by a Reddit user named Saskatchewanbr. In Grey’s Anatomy, Season 1, Episode 2, titled, “The First Cut is the Deepest,” the user points out that while watching over a comatose rape victim, Derek tells Meredith what he would want if he was ever in the same position as the patient, “You know I have four sisters? Very girly, tons of kids. If I was in a coma, they’d all be here. I’d want them here.”

Of course, in Season 11, after Derek falls into a coma after getting hit by car while he was ironically saving people, Meredith goes it alone when deciding McDreamy’s fate. And when she decides to take him off life support as a result of the accident, none of his sisters are present, because she never called them.

While the foreshadowing theory certainly is interesting, Refinery29 believes that the more likely scenario for Derek’s sudden death involves the spotty relationship between actor Patrick Dempsey (Derek Shepherd) and the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes.

Either way, the action that Meredith took in not calling Amelia, or any of Derek’s other sisters, to come say their last goodbye’s or give their input on his fate, left Amelia wrecked and put a huge strain on the relationship between her and Meredith.

But forgetting Derek’s wishes can’t really be held against Meredith, since the show is currently in it’s twelfth season, and his wishes came during the early stages of Season 1. But Amelia does have the right to hold it against her for not summoning her to her brother’s death bed.

Nevertheless, the grudge is still there and when, if ever, the pair sort out their beef, one thing is for sure — Meredith will soon be back to finding love.

Silver Times reports that in Episode 15 of this season of Grey’s Anatomy, airing March 24, Meredith will be back on board to find love. While she does have a considerable amount of baggage, including a dead husband and two kids, it’s been over a year since McDreamy’s death. So it’s time to move on, right?

Perhaps along with finding a new beau, Meredith will also patch things up with Amelia before the season is out. Maybe, maybe, not. It’s impossible to predict what Shonda Rhimes has planned. Maybe Derek’s ghost will appear to his sisters and finally put things to rest. Perhaps Patrick Dempsey will return to the show for a cameo.

Or not. Either way, the writers certainly know how to tease fans. And if, in fact, they did do their research in planning Derek’s death by digging up a pointless conversation between Meredith and Derek, then big props to them.

In the meantime, make sure to stay up to speed with all of your favorite characters by watching Grey’s Anatomy Thursday nights on ABC.
