Hey, How’s ‘Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day’ Going?
“So far, so good,” you could say to anyone on either side of the controversy surrounding the anti-gay marriage fast-food chain on “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.”
Wednesday was selected by conservative figures such as Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum as a day to show your support for Chick-fil-A and President Dan Cathy for his stand against gay marriage by stopping in to your nearest location grab a chicken sandwich and some bangin’ waffle fries for lunch. Imagine Chick-fil-A as kind of an ideological battleground today. You’re not just grabbing a bite to eat, you’re waging war on the issue of homosexual rights with your choice to dine or not to dine at Chick-fil-A today.
So how goes the battle?
Pretty good for both sides, depending where you’re at.
Minnesota Public Radio gathered media reports state-to-state, with Texas, Wisconsin, and Virgina Beach showing very strong attendance at Chick-fil-A’s in the area. Of particular note, 93-year-old evangelist Billy Graham showed his support of Chick-fil-A as well, though he dined at his North Carolina home, reports Mercury News.
Not so fast, Chick-fil-A!
Today’s generous outpouring of support has also turned up quite a bit of criticism, opposition, and good-old-fashioned activism as well. The U.S. News reported that “the show of support prompted opposing events all across the country staged by supporters of gay marriage and animal-rights advocates.”
MSNBC also reports that Los Angeles-area Chick-fil-A’s have been the target of protestors and activists all day long, and that new Chick-fil-A stores opening across the country also face similar protests.
Though it’s pretty hard to say for sure how “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” is going just yet, both sides are definitely out in force today. Surely boosts or drops in sales at the company stemming form today will be reported on sometime tomorrow, but while it’s easy to see how many people are supporting Chick-fil-A by eating there today, what do you count that against to find out how many people don‘t support Chick-fil-A?
