Sad Grandpa Photo Nearly Breaks The Internet, Absentee Grandkids Get Death Threats

A sad grandpa photo touched the hearts of the internet this week and even sparked death threats against the five grandchildren who ruined the man’s special dinner.

Kelsey Harmon is one of the sad grandpa’s six grandchildren – the only one who showed up for the dinner he made to enjoy with his young loved ones. Harmon, an Oklahoma college student, tweeted a photo of her beloved papaw looking very sad as he sat around a table with the 12 hamburgers he had made for all six of the grandchildren.

“Dinner with papaw tonight…he made 12 burgers for all 6 grandkids and I’m the only one who showed. (crying emoji) love him,” Kelsey Harmon tweeted.

Kelsey Harmon’s photo of her sad papaw not only shamed her cousins who skipped the special dinner, but caused tens of thousands of social media users to tear up and miss their own grandparents. She was bombarded with comments from the folks who saw the photo. The photo of the sad grandpa was also turned into multiple viral memes.

A recent study by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences stated that chronic loneliness has been linked to increased risk of chronic disease and mortality, especially in the elderly. A total of 10 percent of the elderly is reportedly chronically lonely.

Harmon posted the sad grandpa photo on Twitter on Wednesday evening. In just 48 hours it has garnered 137,000 likes and 82,000 retweets. The five grandchildren who skipped dinner with their papaw were sought out on social media and were staunchly chastised for the disappointing their grandpa, MSN notes.

Brock Harmon, one of the six grandchildren who did not show up for hamburgers, ultimately made it to see his papaw later in the evening. He posted another photo of a less sad grandpa on Twitter and said, “Papaw said he forgives me and wants all of you to know y’all are awesome for making him famous.

Anger from social media users took a very dark tone in some cases. Kelsey Harmon had to get back on her social media account and ask for all of the death threats against her cousins to stop – they did not. Hundreds, if not thousands, of posters offered to go eat a hamburger with the sad grandpa, many of which noted how much they wish their own grandparents were still living so they could spend time with them.

“Papaw is ok guys I promise & he loves all grandkids equally,” Kelsey Harmon tweeted. “plz stop sending my cousins death threats everything is ok!!!!”

Twitter users from around the world chimed in with kinds words for the sad papaw, including at least one celebrity.

She also was sent uplifting messages stating that her sad grandpa encouraged them to go spend more time with their grandparents, CNN reports.

“I’ve also seen many sad posts, people saying that they don’t get the chance to see their grandparents, and my heart aches for them,” the dedicated granddaughter said.

Kelsey Harmon sent a final tweet about the sad papaw dinner and thank everyone for all of their kinds words about the grandparent she dearly loves. She apologized for not being able to answer everyone directly but noted that she was receiving hundreds of tweets per minute.
