Americans Beg Justin Trudeau, Feminist And Canadian PM, To Run For President

It’s hard not to get a little entranced by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, with his wavy black hair, boyish smile, and shirtless pictures on the internet. But for all that swooning, he’s turning out to be a stellar world leader, and he proved it on Wednesday by telling a United Nations conference that he’s a feminist.

As Trudeau famously said last year, he’s a feminist “because it’s 2015.” Since using that phrase to explain why he appointed an equal number of men and women to his cabinet, it has become a rallying cry for gender equality, CBC News noted.

Officials responded to his feminist declaration by saying Justin Trudeau and the Canadian government are leading the world by example in the push for gender equality. But in his comments at the UN conference, Justin emphasized that defining oneself as a feminist shouldn’t really be a big deal, the Toronto Star added.

“I’m going to keep saying, loud and clearly, that I am a feminist. Until it is met with a shrug. It shouldn’t be something that creates a reaction. It’s simply saying that I believe in the equality of men and women and that we still have an awful lot of work to do to get there. That’s like saying the sky is blue and the grass is green … It’s just really, really obvious. We should be standing up for women’s rights and trying to create more equal societies? Like, duh.”

Like, duh is right. Justin Trudeau has already put his money where his mouth is, proposing policies and taking actions he’s declared as unexceptional but vital in breaking down “deep-seated perceptions and habits.”

His vision for the future holds that the next generation will lead the way in the feminist movement. He’s started with his own kids, two boys and a girl, by teaching them to embrace gender equality. Justin Trudeau admitted that his feminist attitude started with his own parents.

As prime minister, Justin Trudeau has tried to make some progress to encourage work-life balance. He wants to extend parental leave and make Parliament, which he said was designed for “old white guys,” more family friendly. Another of his feminist ideas is to make companies admit how many men versus women they employ.

There is more work done, however. Even though one could argue “‘we’ve come such a long way, I don’t think there’s that much left to do,'” Justin noted, “just tell them to ask any woman they know.”

The earnings gap and violence against women, in particular aboriginal women, are still ongoing struggles.

And speaking at an event later, Justin Trudeau may have unintentionally thrown shade on some U.S. presidential candidates by lauding Canadians’ willingness to vote for an “open, fair, positive way of doing politics” and hoping other world governments would follow suit. When the audience erupted in applause, he claimed he wasn’t “thinking of any place in particular” before more applause cut him off.

And because Justin Trudeau — feminist, greeter of Syrian refugee children, and political eye-candy — is offering a refreshing counterpoint to a presidential election that has stirred up prejudice and violence nationwide, a pair of American men were caught on video begging him to run for president here.

The scene, which took place in the Mile End Delicatessen in New York City and was filmed by journalist Marie-Joëlle Parent, may have been a prank.

The men approached Justin Trudeau and dropped to their knees, begging him to be the commander in chief. They lamented the current candidates, calling them “so bad,” “terrible,” “boring,” and “weird,” CBC News reported. But their faces may have been seen before — outside a Donald Trump event wearing Nazi armbands, at a Hillary Clinton Rally wearing a T-shirts that read “Settle for Hillary,” and interrupting a Marco Rubio even to accuse the former candidate of stealing his girlfriend.

Justin Trudeau didn’t take the bait and left the men disappointed.

“I don’t know if you noticed, but I actually have a job, and it’s a pretty good one.”
