The Bangladesh T20 cricket team starts gunning for a World Cup trophy as they face Pakistan in a match that will stream live from the historic Eden Gardens cricket stadium in Kolkata, India, one day after the World T20 tournament began with a stunning upset that creates an unexpected opportunity for Bangladesh. Or, for that matter, for Pakistan.
But until the match gets underway Wednesday afternoon, the Bangladesh players say they are simply taking in the atmosphere of the legendary cricket venue, after they cruised through their qualifying round in Dharamsala last week.
“All of us are excited. There used to be a time when 90,000 people came here,” said Bangladesh Captain Mashrafe Mortaza at press conference on Tuesday. “It is one of the best venues in the world. We want to play well here and make our outing a memorable one. Of course we can hope for support from the crowd. Obviously, it depends on a particular individual but as a Bengali, I can certainly hope that Kolkata will support us.”
Mortaza also said that Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal, who scored Tigers’ first-ever century in T20 cricket to lead Bangladesh past Oman to clinch qualification for the World Cup Super 10, would be favored by conditions at Eden Gardens. In the qualifying round, Tamim scored 233 runs off 147 balls, leading the competition, and was dismissed only once out of three innings.

“Tamim’s is in good touch. Not only Tamim all batsmen will be fired up especially since it is T20. The wickets here are different than what they were in Bangladesh. Here they are a lot flatter and so obviously the likes of Tamim can attack,” Mortaza said.
Bangladesh has never defeated Pakistan in four previous T20 World Cup games, but in their last two meetings — in the Asia Cup earlier this month and in a single T20 International last year — the Tigers have come out on top.

The Super 10 round of the T20 Cricket World Cup opened on Tuesday with a stunning upset that turned the outlook for the tournament on its head, as the tournament hosts and heavy favorites India were crushed by New Zealand.
While India bowlers restricted the Black Caps to a modest total of 126, after New Zealand Captain Kane Williamson won the toss and chose to bat, the Kiwi spinners dazzled India batsmen. Led by 24-year-old left-armer Mitchell Santner who took four wickets and legbreak bowler Ish Sodhi with three, New Zealand bowled out the hosts in 18.1 overs for just 79 runs.
The India loss opens the way for either Bangladesh or Pakistan to make an early move into the top two in Group Two, where Australia is the fifth team.
Each team in both groups plays every other time once, with the top two teams from Group One and Group Two advancing to the semifinals.
