Rachel Hutson: Teen Who Murdered Her Mom Gives Jailhouse Interview To Dr. Phil

A teenage girl from Virginia killed her mother and then sent a photo of the corpse to her father on Thanksgiving morning. Rachel Hutson was 19 when she murdered her mom, Susan Lee Hutson, in 2013. The convicted killer is sharing her story for the first time with Dr. Phil later today.

A preview for the Dr. Phil episode with Rachel Hutson shows the young women describing exactly what she was feeling when she pointed a gun at her mother and squeezed the trigger.

“I told her that I was sorry. That this was what had to happen and she told me I was crazy,” Hutson stated during the jailhouse interview.

She is being housed at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail in Portsmouth, Virginia.

“I shot her, I don’t think she realized what had happened. I couldn’t hear anything, it made my ears ring. I could tell she was dead, she wasn’t moving. I told her I was sorry, I just kept saying I was sorry.”

After Rachel Hutson shot and killed her mother, she texted her father, Donald Hutson. The shocked dad did not believe what his teenage daughter said, so she sent him a photo of her mom’s bloody dead body. The elder Hutson was out getting some early Black Friday deals when the killing occurred.

During the Dr. Phil interview, Rachel also said that she had debated about committing suicide after killing her mother. She opted against ending her own life after thinking about how it would impact her father. Susan Lee Hutson was 58-years-old when she was gruesomely murdered by her own daughter, the Daily Mail reports.

“I was scared that my dad was going to come home and I was going to be dead and mom was going to be dead and there would still be a gun in the house. And I was scared he would do something to himself, so I called him,” Rachel added.

According to the convicted murderer, her dad thought that she was merely attempting to “upset him” when she texted that she had shot and killed her mother. Her concerned father called his wife’s phone, and his daughter answered that line as well. The evening before the murder occurred, Rachel and Donald had another in an ongoing series of arguments. The pair had promised to work harder to get along better, according to the daughter.

“I kept telling him that she was dead. He still didn’t believe me. And I wanted him to believe me because every second of reality was unbearable, and I really wanted to hurry up and be gone. It was like every second it was getting worse,” Hutson said during the interview.

Why she chose to kill her mother remains at least slightly unclear. Susan Lee Hutson had reportedly been suffering from diabetes, kidney failure, and heart failure for quite some time before she was murdered by her daughter. Rachel says she had been tasked with daily caregiver duties for “years.”

Rachel Hutson also revealed that the night before she shot and killed her mother, Donald called her into his room to discuss what she was doing up so late at night. Rachel says when she told him she had been hanging out on her computer, the father and daughter got into an argument.

She said that after the dispute, she felt “nothing was ever going to get better” and nothing was going to change. She added that she felt she would always be forced to constantly endure stress. The convicted killer also noted that she knew nothing was going to improve for her once her mom passed.

“I knew I had bad years ahead of me,” Hutson told Dr. Phil.

During the murder trial last fall, Sarah Hutson, the sister of the convicted killer, told the court that Rachel had been prone to “fits of rage.” Sarah also told the judge that she feels her sister is suffering from some type of undiagnosed mental illness.

During the Dr. Phil interview, which will air later today, Rachel will face her grieving relatives for the first time since she was incarcerated. Sarah Hutson said that she and her father will forgive Rachel for murdering Sarah, but it will take time.

“You guys being here for me right now is enough,” Rachel said.

Rachel Hutson promised her sister and her dad that she will not hurt them ever again and professes her love for them during the jailhouse interview.

Hutson has begged the judge for mercy in the case and claims after starting to take medications to help her gain control of her emotions, she is a much more stable person.
