‘The Vampire Diaries’ Cancelled? Ian Somerhalder And Nina Dobrev To Reunite On ‘The Originals’

There has been a lot of talk lately about The CW cancelling The Vampire Diaries. Although the series has been renewed for another season, the longevity of the hit show is still uncertain. With The Originals doing so well, is it possible that some of the characters will join the show’s spinoff?

According to the Parent Herald, recent developments on The Vampire Diaries point towards the series beginning to wrap things up. In the latest episode of the show, titled “I Would For You,” fans watched as Damon (Ian Somerhalder) sought out Bonnie (Kat Graham) to aid in the 60-year sleep. With Somerhalder’s character wanting an escape, many fans speculated that an end was in sight.

Reports of a coming cancellation first sprung up after Nina Dobrev announced her departure at the end of season 6. In fact, many fans expected the series to fold soon after Dobrev’s exit. The series has managed to continue on, although it hasn’t been the smoothest of sailing.

Not only has the series experienced low ratings this season, but The CW also decided to move the show to a new timeslot. Apparently, the move was in large part due to the ratings drop. In fact, the series lost around half of its viewership after the conclusion of Season 6.

Despite the low ratings and talk of a possible cancellation, showrunner Julie Plec and the rest of her team are hopeful that the series will continue on for another year.

“I know we have a very large crew and cast of people who really want to be doing what we love on this show next year, so keep your fingers crossed,” Plec shared.

Fortunately, TV Line is reporting that The Vampire Diaries has been renewed for an eighth season. At this point, it isn’t clear how many episodes have been ordered and what the new season will entail. Furthermore, neither Somerhalder nor Paul Wesley have confirmed their roles in the new season.

Despite the renewal, Design & Trend is reporting that fans have not reacted kindly to the news of another season of The Vampire Diaries. With many fans taking to social media to express their disapproval with The CW, it is unclear how long the show will last in its new season. If the ratings continue to drop, there is little question that the network will pull the plug.

If the series is cancelled, there is a possibility that some of the characters will crossover and appear in The Originals. According to Celeb Dirty Laundry, there is a strong chance that this will include Dobrev, who has already made a cameo on The Originals.

Following Dobrev’s exit from The Vampire Diaries, it was rumored that she would sign on full time with The Originals. Instead, Dobrev has tried her hand on the big screen, although there is a possibility that she could return for another cameo in the future.

As far as the other characters are concerned, Celeb Dirty Laundry is also reporting that a number of them could easily make the transition to the spinoff. This includes Caroline (Candice Accola), who has already showed a liking for Klaus (Joseph Morgan), and Bonnie, considering her status as a witch.

While Damon and Stefan could make future appearances on The Originals, it isn’t likely that either of them will transfer over as cast regulars. After all, The Originals already has a solid core of male leads, so adding any more male characters would not make a lot of sense.

The seventh season of The Vampire Diaries continues Friday nights on The CW.
