‘Daredevil’ Season Two On Netflix: What We Can Expect

Netflix and Marvel’s Daredevil has come back for a second season following its highly successful first season, with the new season airing this Friday, March 18. Charlie Cox returns as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, along with a couple of new faces that will be pretty exciting to see — those being Elektra and The Punisher, both serving key roles in the character’s history.

We’re going to be introduced to Jon Bernthal’s Punisher in the very first episode of the second season, which is definitely a shift from the first season. Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk and Matt Murdock didn’t come face-to-face until the ninth episode, and Fisk himself wasn’t introduced until the very end of the third episode. Daredevil season one was certainly a slow-burn, with the creative team really taking their time with the characters and plot elements. Daredevil season two seems to be doing quite the opposite, hitting the ground running with the first episode and never letting up.

This may very well having everything to do with Daredevil‘s former showrunner Steven S. DeKnight leaving the series, with Doug Petrie (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Marco Ramirez (Sons of Anarchy) taking over. Thanks to them, we get to see Daredevil going after Punisher from the very start.

“Matt Murdock is a guy who’s driven towards violence, and yet he has a very Catholic, very blue-collar, very New York code which he will not break,” Petrie said in an interview. “Then Frank Castle shows up and basically calls him a hypocrite from the go and says, ‘I’m the exact same thing except I carry a gun. Seriously dude, what’s the difference?’ And Matt doesn’t have a ready answer for that.”

This season, it seems, Matt is going to be racked with self-doubt and questioning his own motives. His best friend, Foggy Nelson, serves as almost his Jiminy Cricket, and if weren’t for Foggy, Matt may very well have turned down a darker path.

This second Daredevil trailer offers a completely different view, focusing on Elektra and the Hand, a shadowy (and mystical) ninja clan who were one of Daredevil’s greatest adversaries in the comics.

“I think the fascination in these two characters is that when Matt Murdock looks at Elektra Natchios,” Petrie continues, “everyone else sees a sociopath — literally someone who has no heart or empathy or capability for true love — and Matt sees this glimmer of a soul inside of her and he loves that soul.”

Elektra Natchios was created by comic artist and writer Frank Miller and made her debut in Daredevil #168 in January of 1981. The character was ever-so-subtly referenced in Daredevil Season One, as a brief girlfriend in Matt’s past while he was in college. Élodie Yung is portraying the character for the Netflix series and may be competing with actress Deborah Ann Woll (who plays Karen Page) for the affection of Matt. There were small hints of a romantic connection between Matt and Karen in the first season, and that will most likely continue to be explored during Daredevil Season Two.

Season One also gave a quick reference to Matt Murdock’s mother, Margaret Murdock. We only see young Matt being raised by his father Jack in the first season. In the comics, Margaret suffered from postpartum depression and went into a psychotic paranoia that resulted in her trying to harm her son one night. She then ran away from her family, and after being taken in by a church, she became a nun. It’s possible the character could appear in a cameo in this second season.

The Punisher is looking for vengeance, hunting down the men who murdered his family, as well as cleaning up the streets of Hell’s Kitchen much like Daredevil — only with guns and much more violence. But according to MCU Exchange, D’Onofrio may be returning as Wilson Fisk to interact with Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle. Fisk was taken to prison in the final episode of season one, and apparently he’s still in prison, but will be sharing some screen time with The Punisher — what they will be discussing is completely up in the air, if this rumor is even true. The site claims that D’Onofrio was spotted on set last October.

Marvel’s Daredevil Season Two, will premiere globally on Netflix on Friday, March 18, 2016 at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Standard Time.
