Tyshawn Lee: Slayed Boy’s Father Arrested In Retaliation Shooting

Pierre Stokes, 25, is accused of shooting three people on Chicago’s South Side in retaliation for the execution-style murder of his 9-year-old son. Stokes is the father of Tyshawn Lee, who was gunned down by suspected gang members late last year.

Stokes was arrested Friday, March 8, after shooting two alleged gang members and a girlfriend of 27-year-old Corey Morgan, who was arrested and charged in Tyshawn’s death.

According to Fox News, a 31-year old male was injured in the left arm, a 30-year-old male was injured in the right arm, and a 29-year-old female was grazed in the face.

The alleged shooting occurred less than 24 hours after authorities brought charges against a second man, 22-year-old Dwright Boone-Doty, for the November 2 murder of the 9-year-old boy. Fox News reports Police are still looking for a third suspect named Kevin Edwards.

Tyshawn’s murder was a reprisal for the death of Corey’s brother Tracy. Authorities believe Tracy was shot and killed after leaving a meeting with local police. According to reports, the meeting was planned to discourage local youths from becoming involved in gang violence.

Tracey Morgan was a known Black P Stones gang member and Stokes has been accused of having affiliations with the Gangster Disciples.

Corey Morgan, a convicted felon with an extensive and violent criminal history, vowed to avenge his brother’s death threatening to kill “grandmas, mamas, kids… ” of rival gang members, according to court documents.

Investigators say Corey and two other men went out daily looking for potential targets before eventually preying on Tyshawn Lee because of his father’s rival gang affiliations.

Authorities allege Boone-Doty lured the innocent boy into a back alley while Corey and Edwards followed in a white SUV. The man then shot the 9-year-old three times at point blank range. The little boy was shot in the back and the head. A third bullet had severed the top of his right thumb, suggesting he tried to ward off the gunshots with his hand.

City Police Superintendent, Garry McCarthy, described the shooting as “targeted and calculated.”

“This is a crime that shook our city. It was an act of barbarism, the assassination of a 9-year-old child as a gang retaliation to get back at his father.”

McCarthy partially blames Tyshawn Lee’s father for the lengthy investigation, as he “has not helped the police at all.”

Stokes appeared in court Monday with Chicago Police spokesman, Anthony Guglielmi, saying, “This represents the challenge that police grapple with … Mr. Stokes, who was involved in a gang lifestyle, ultimately suffered an unspeakable loss with the calculated execution of his son. But despite this, he has continued to engage in the same gang activity that started this cycle of retaliatory violence.”

As reported by Time, Tyshawn Lee’s death in a Chicago alley is all too common. In 2012, Chicago gained notoriety as the murder capital of the United States registering 503 homicides more than any other American city. In 2015, Chicago Police said murders were up 12.5 percent from the previous year and that there were more shootings—13 percent more than the year before.

Programs like YMCA, Ceasefire, Street Intervention, and BUILD, have been working to quash ongoing tension, mediate conflicts, and stop reprisal shootings among gang members. Unfortunately, funding to sustain these programs has been drastic and has reduced the number of violence prevention advocates on the streets.

These cuts may have contributed to the reason a retaliatory conflict between Gangster Disciples and Black P Stone Gang went unchecked from August to November 2015.

Ceasefire Illinois was one of the organizations that had been working meticulously trying to prevent gang violence from spiraling out of control before the budget cuts. The “violence interrupter” organization was operating in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood where Tyshawn Lee was brutally murdered.
