‘Fallout 4: Automatron’ Trailer Shows Joy Of Creating Killer Robots

Bethesda Softworks released the first trailer for Fallout 4: Automatron on Monday, along with giving the game’s first DLC a release date. The promised fun with the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC game’s first expansion comes not just from killing a horde of evil robots, but assembling your own robot to help kill a horde of evil robots.

Automatron will launch for Fallout 4 on Tuesday, March 22, according to a Bethesda post. As previously covered, the DLC will cost $9.99 when purchased individually and is included at no extra cost with the Season Pass, which now costs $49.99.

In Automatron, the mysterious Mechanist has unleashed a horde of evil robots into the Commonwealth, including the devious Robobrain. Hunt them down and harvest their parts to build and mod your own custom robot companions. Choose from hundreds of mods, mixing limbs, armor, abilities, and weapons, such as the all-new lightning chain gun. Even customize their paint schemes and choose their voices!

The accompanying trailer shows a robot seeking the help of Fallout 4‘s protagonist to stop the Mechanist. This comes with a new station that can be used to assemble a robot companion from parts collected around the post-apocalyptic Boston wasteland. Players will be able to make walking robots, rolling robots, hovering robots, and even robots with skulls or stuffed cat toy heads. Bethesda promises “thousands of combinations.”

It’s like the idea of the TV show, Battlebots, realized in the full glory of Fallout 4 as robots with lasers, saws, drills, and other deadly accoutrements are sent into battle. The protagonist appears to get some new gear, as well, with a robot-like armor suit shown along with a new weapon. Note that characters will need to be at least level 15 to gain access to the Automatron DLC and the robot building in the game.

The Mechanist is, of course, a bit of a retread from Fallout 3. The character was comparatively harmful person named Scott Wollinski in that game, though, and was just as likely to fight robots as he was to fight with them. It was all part of a suitably strange sidequest involving a rivalry between the character and the AntAgonizer.

In Fallout 4, the Mechanist is a villain in the Silver Shroud raid series. This version of the character is attempting to replace humanity with his own robot army while the hero, Silver Shroud, investigates and stops the villain. This setup appears to be closer to Automatron, so it will be interesting to see how they connect.

Fallout 4‘s second DLC, Wasteland Workshop, is still on schedule to be released in April for $4.99. This is an expansion to the game’s Settlement-building feature. New design options will be made available for lighting, letter kits, taxidermy, and more. Meanwhile, players will also have the option to build cages to capture everything from Raiders to Deathclaws. They can be tamed or thrown into a gladiatorial arena that players build themselves for a fight to the death.

Far Harbor will be the third Fallout 4 DLC, and the first expansion to the campaign. It still targets a May release and will send players on a journey to the coast of Maine to navigate the conflict between the synths, the Children of the Atom, and the local townspeople. This expansion adds a huge new landmass to the game, along with new creatures, armor, weapons, and more. As such, it is the most expensive of the three announced DLC releases so far, at $24.99 when purchased individually.

Bethesda Game Studios has more planned beyond the first three Fallout 4 DLC add-ons. More expansions will be released through 2016 along with free updates to the game to make improvements.
