‘Sword Art Online’ Movie: New Trailer Provides Subtitle Of ‘Ordinal Scale,’ An ARMMO-RPG Designed Exclusively For Augma [Video]

A new trailer for the upcoming Sword Art Online movie was recently released for anime fans. It was revealed the subtitle of the movie is “Ordinal Scale,” which is described as an ARMMO-RPG designed specifically for Augma.

Hype for the upcoming Sword Art Online movie first began back in October. According to IGN, the movie adaptation was first revealed by A-1 Pictures at the Dengeki Bunko Autumn Festival. The film’s plot will be a brand new story, written by series creator Reki Kawahara. Tomohiko Ito is signed on to be its director, while Shingo Adachi returns for character design. A sneak peek of the upcoming movie at the time was sent to Anime News Network. It was surely a teaser because it revealed very little of the upcoming movie.

Now fans are learning more about the upcoming Sword Art Online movie thanks to a new movie trailer, as mentioned earlier. First off, the subtitle of the new movie will be “Ordinal Scale.” Not much was detailed about what Ordinal Scale meant in the trailer except that it is an ARMMO-RPG (augmented reality massively multiplayer online role-playing game) designed exclusively for Augma, but thankfully the official Sword Art Online movie website gave an explanation on what it is exactly without spoiling the upcoming movie’s story whatsoever.

“Following [Ordinal Scale]’s release, it has become the most discussed game due to its advanced technology. In this game, players can raise their rank by collecting items that appear in various places in the real world and by defeating monsters. This ‘Ranking System’ is the main feature of the game, and in this system, each player’s status is determined by their rank which is indicated by an ordinal number instead of a cardinal number. As the result, high ranking players are given overwhelming power and often rank has become a major factor in deciding the outcome of a PvP battle”

Summarized, Ordinal Scale is an MMO-RPG utilizing the real world as its setting. In the movie, such is possible through Augma, which is described as an augmented reality type information terminal.

“[The Augma is] a next-generation, wearable multi-device that looks like a pair of small headphones. In terms of size and portability, it is far superior to the existing VR machine ‘Amusphere.’ Augma doesn’t have a full-dive function, however, its AR function is greatly enhanced to compensate for it. It can transmit visual, audio and tactual sensation data to players while they are awake, thus enabling the users to enjoy fitness and health management like a game.”

Ordinal Scale is unique from the other four eponymous worlds of Sword Art Online, Sword Art Online (SAO), Alfheim Online (ALO), Gun Gale Online (GGO), and UnderWorld (UW), because the setting is real-world. That means Kirito and Asuna could be sitting at a bench watching clouds go by in real life, and their Augmas equipped with Ordinal Scale would show flying monsters in those clouds. The two fighting the monsters might look ridiculous to others around them who are not wearing Augma though.

Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale is still in production and is scheduled to release sometime in 2017. Fans can check out their recently launched official website, which provides the latest information on the upcoming anime movie.
