‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Gets Another Season And Justin Chambers Will Be There

Grey’s Anatomy fans have had a couple of scares about the future of their favorite show in the last several months. First, there was the departure of Patrick Dempsey which left us fearful for the show’s future, but news of renewal for a 13th season of Grey’s Anatomy reassured fans.

But then there was the news that contracts for several members of the cast end at the end of this season, Season 12. Will the Grey’s Anatomy characters we’ve come to love return for Season 13? We got good news this week on one of them.

Six Grey’s Anatomy actors have contracts that end at the close of Season 12. They are, as reported by TV Line, Sara Ramirez (Dr. Callie Torres), James Pickens, Jr. (Dr. Richard Webber), Kevin McKidd (Dr. Owen Hunt), Chandra Wilson (Dr. Miranda Bailey), Justin Chambers (Dr. Alex Karev), and Ellen Pompeo (Dr. Meredith Grey). This week 45-year-old Justin Chambers confirmed via Twitter that he will return for Season 13.

This is great news for all the viewers who have watched Grey’s Anatomy since its first season. Thirteen seasons is a lot in TV land but not near enough if you ask fans of this hit show. Every year we hope the TV gods see fit to give us another year and so far they have. Shonda Rhimes has a hit on her hands with Grey’s Anatomy as well as other Thursday night shows like Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder. We can’t help but wonder though, does the cast think about when this amazing run with Grey’s Anatomy will end? Dr. Grey herself, Ellen Pompeo, said this to Cosmopolitan about the matter.

“I do think about it. I think about it a lot. And I can’t really talk about my future plans, but yes, Shonda and I talk about it. We feel like we’re in this together, and I think we don’t want to do the show without each other. I think when either of us is ready, when we feel like it’s time to wrap it up [we will]. When she feels like it’s time to wrap it up, I’m happy to, and if I were to feel that way, she would probably be OK too. We have a good relationship in that way, and hopefully it’s a decision we’ll come to together.”

Here’s hoping Ellen and Shonda don’t break our hearts with this Grey’s Anatomy news any time soon. Honestly, there is no sign of it slowing down. ABC President Paul Lee told E! Online, when asked about the future of Grey’s Anatomy and Castle, that he “would like to see them run for many, many years to come.” And regarding Rhimes’ ability to continue writing good stories for the show? “She has great plans for next season and many years beyond.” Yes!

Although we don’t have official confirmation, we do have good news from Grey’s Anatomy actor Kevin McKidd who indicated to TV Line back in January that he is very interested in continuing on the show. He talked to them about his character, Dr. Owen Hunt.

“I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t happen. I love [the show]. I’m not being corny or giving you the party line, but this has been like a family for me… For many years, Owen was just a reflection of Cristina. He was there just as someone to bounce things off of Cristina. Now we’re getting to see Owen a little more independently and learn about who this guy is outside of the Cristina Yang of it all. So I’m really enjoying that. I don’t feel as though I’m finished.”

We couldn’t agree more! We hope to see McKidd and all the Grey’s Anatomy docs for years to come!

To date, Grey’s Anatomy has aired 264 episodes. They’ve won two Golden Globes, one to Sandra Oh in 2006 for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television and one to the show itself in 2007 for Best Television Series – Drama.
