Will Reese Witherspoon Ever Bring Back Elle Woods For ‘Legally Blonde 3?’

Fans of Legally Blonde have been crossing their fingers for a third installment of the film ever since Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Fabulous hit screens in 2003. But would Reese Witherspoon ever bring back Elle Woods?

Reese most recently spoke about the possibility of Legally Blonde 3 during an appearance on Fashionably Late with Rachel Zoe in October, where she confessed that now would be the right time to bring back the popular franchise.

“I actually think it’s kind of great right now because we’re talking about women in politics and how important that is to get more women,” Witherspoon said at the time, referencing Hilary Clinton’s April 2015 presidential run announcement.

“I think it’d be kind of a cool thing to have her be a Supreme Court justice or someone who runs for office,” Reese said of her character.

“I think we’re ready to see Elle and see what she’s up to lately,” Witherspoon continued to tease about the possibility of the Legally Blonde franchise continuing with a third installment. She added, “a lot of writers over the years have come up with different ideas” for another movie.

Reese also revealed last year in an interview with E! News that there actually once was a possibility that the franchise would be expanded beyond the two current films into a trio of movies.

“They had an idea…” Reese Witherspoon teased of Legally Blonde 2 at the time, though she didn’t let slip any of the details when it came to what Elle Woods might have gotten up to in the third installment.

Reese’s co-star Jennifer Coolidge also confirmed that there was once a plan to bring Legally Blonde 3 to life, but admitted that Witherspoon’s busy schedule on and off screen got in the way of the film ever happening.

“She had a baby at home, or two babies at home, and she was doing Legally Blonde during the day. It was bizarre how much that girl can handle,” Jennifer said of Reese Witherspoon to the New York Daily News in 2013. “She carried Legally Blonde,” Coolidge continued of Witherspoon. “I was blown away by her.”

While Reese nor Jennifer were eager to reveal much about the planned movie at the time, Reese did tease in an interview on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live! back in October that there have been a number of people pitching their own ideas for what Elle Woods could be doing today.

“Somebody pitched me an idea the other day,” Reese told host Andy Cohen last year, revealing that “somebody thought it would be really funny if Elle went to jail.”

While there are no official plans to revive the franchise just yet, if Reese Witherspoon does make her big return to the big screen as Elle Woods, she’ll unfortunately have to do it without her beloved Chihuahua, Bruiser.

Witherspoon took to Instagram on March 11 to share some sad news with fans of the romantic comedy franchise, which first debuted 15-years ago, revealing that the dog that played her beloved sidekick had recently passed away.

“With a sad heart, I have to let all the #LegallyBlonde fans know that Bruiser Woods (also known as Moonie) passed away yesterday,” Reese captioned a photo of herself and Elle’s four legged friend on Instagram.

“He was a sweet little Chihuahua who was very loved. I will never forget all the days we spent together,” Witherspoon continued. “I’m sure his tail is wagging in the sky. Sending love to his trainer, the wonderful @tailsticks.” Reese signed off her post with a broken heart emoji and the caption, “#RIPBruiser.”
