Kimberly Rhode Wins Skeet Shooting Gold For Team USA, Sets Record

Kimberly Rhode became the first American to take home an individual-sport medal in five consecutive Olympics after she claimed the gold medal in women’s skeet shooting on Sunday afternoon.

Even more impressive was Rhode’s ability to tie an Olympic record with 99 points. Rhode began competing in the skeet competition as a teenager when she claimed a gold medal in double trap during the 1996 Atlanta summer games, she then went on to claim a bronze in that same event four years later followed by a gold in Athens during the 2004 Atlanta games and a silver in Beijing in 2008.

Rhode is no stranger to tying or beating Olympic records, during her qualifying round this year she missed only one of 75 shots and led by four points entering the final round.

During the first two qualifying rounds Rhode was 25-for-25 before running up to 65 straight hits before her only qualifying misfire before going on to shoot an almost perfect event.

Following behind in her dominating performance was Wei Ning of China who ended with 91 points and Danka Bartekova of Slovakia who claimed the bronze with 90 points. Bartekova beat out Russia’s Marina Belikova during a shootout.

The skeet shooting field included 17 women from 17 nations and ended in a six player final on Sunday afternoon.

After winning the gold medal Rhode gave thanks to her supporters who showed up to watch the final before she retreated away from the day’s heavy rainfall.

The U.S. was in desperate need of a gold medal and now trails China 6 to 2 in the gold medal count.
