Houston Family Washes Hands Of Upcoming Whitney Houston Biopic

The estate of the late singer Whitney Houston is making it known that they have no affiliation to the upcoming biopic covering her life. The Houston clan has not endorsed the biopic, and are reportedly displeased with the making of the made-for-TV show, which will air on BBC Two.

Apparently, the Whitney Houston biopic is doubly irritating to the Houston family because Nick Broomfield is the director, reports the Source. Broomfield has built a controversial reputation following the making of the documentary Kurt & Courtney in 1998, which included coverage of the conspiracy theory speculating that Courtney Love had a hand in the death of her partner, Kurt Cobain. Despite Courtney Love’s best efforts to stop the documentary, it aired to heated controversy.

In 2015, the Houston clan opposed another biopic of the life of Whitney, to no avail. Rolling Stone magazine notes that Pat Houston, Whitney’s sister-in-law, spoke out against the film, entitled Whitney.

“You should not be surprised that someone decided to do a made-for-TV biopic. And, I might add, without the family’s blessing and despite her mother’s request to not do this movie. It happens every day.”

Whitney made its TV debut on the Lifetime network in January, about two weeks before the infamous incident that left Whitney Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, unresponsive in the bathtub of her Atlanta home.

According to Extra, many people were of the opinion the biopic sent the daughter of Whitney Houston over the edge. Rosie Perez had the following to say on the topic.

“It must have hurt her deeply to watch that. We forget these people are human beings. We put them into the tabloids, and we forget they’re human beings.”

Brown family friend, Debbie Antney, said she believes that Bobbi Kristina was greatly affected by the movie.

“That baby has not stood a chance since she was conceived, just about. She was talked about, ridiculed. All the people that had all those things to say about her… that’s a baby, a 21-year-old baby. To have to constantly listen to things, and to still have to deal with the death of her mom, and every five minutes they are posting something about her mother… and never anything good.”

Bobbi Kristina passed away last July after spending months in a coma. Though an investigation remains open, it is still not known if Bobbi Kristina’s passing, which occurred in exactly the same way Whitney Houston died, was an accident, suicide, or murder. The death of Whitney Houston in 2012 was ruled an accident, but Bobbi Kristina’s passing has raised questions about the true cause of Houston’s death as well. The autopsy report showed Whitney Houston had cocaine, among other drugs, in her system.

The upcoming documentary will detail the “rise and fall” of Whitney Houston and her career. Though details are few, one might expect the biopic to cover the relationship between Bobby Brown, Whitney Houston, and their daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, as well as details of her drug addiction.
