Meghan Trainor’s ‘No’ Hits No. 1: Did She Hit The Mark This Time Around?

Meghan Trainor is back on the charts thanks to her girl empowerment anthem “No.” In a world where Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift are self-proclaimed feminists, Meghan finally gets it right with her new single.

Meghan Trainor is no one-hit number. She is having a great week due to the success of her lead single “No,” which is off her upcoming sophomore album, Thank You. Trainor’s new song is a complete 360 from hit songs like “Dear Future Husband” and “All That Bass.” It’s a club banger that will definitely be playing in all of the nightclubs across the nation this summer.

According to Headline Planet, Thursday is the last day of the current sales week. Trainor’s “No” has climbed up to No. 1 on the U.S. iTunes single sales chart. It previously jumped up to No. 2 during its launch last Friday, but it has dethroned Lukas Graham’s “7 Years” and Blake Shelton’s “Came Here To Forget.” On Tuesday, March 8, Trainor’s “No” hit No. 1 on iTunes. The singer took to her Instagram account to share a video documenting her excitement over the news.

The song has received plenty of exposure on Thursday morning’s editions of Elvis Duran & The Morning Show and the Today show, as well as its constant airplay. Earlier this week, Trainor made a special appearance on CBS’ Sunday Morning which helped give her song even more exposure. Something else that also boosted sales is that fellow pop star and social media queen Selena Gomez shared a clip of herself lip-syncing along to the catchy lyrics on her Snapchat account. As of 12:15 p.m. EST, it became the new winner on the iTunes chart.

A solid week of sales, airplay, and streaming could possibly allow “No” to debut at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. Does this mean that Trainor finally got something right about feminism? She used to sing songs about needing a man on her debut album, Title, which many found sexist and antiquated. It looks like Trainor has learned her lesson this time around with her second album and her new single, according to an essay published on Fuse TV.

“It’s a big anthem for ladies about telling a dude, ‘Nah, I’m good — I’m out here on my own, and I’m good with it,” Trainor told Fuse last month. “The scene is me in a club, and the dude comes up to me and I go, ‘No no no. I don’t need your hands all over me. I’m good. I’m gonna dance on my own with my girls.'”

The singer-songwriter has also promised that her new album will offer something different for her fans. She wants to include more empowerment anthems, like what her musical contemporaries are trying to do. Trainor also revealed that her management team pushed her to do “something no one would expect Meghan Trainor to do,” which explains the new music style.

“It was definitely a war with my label and my management because I was handing in songs, and I did the doo-wop.”

Her management team said, “That’s exactly what everybody’s expecting, Meghan. Hit us with your songwriting skills, hit us with something no one would expect Meghan Trainor to do.”

The hit-making writer expressed, “That pissed me off and fired me up, so I went into the studio and was like, ‘Ugh! We need an angry song! More hip hop, more urban! Let’s go!’ We did that in one day and they loved it.”

The Grammy award winner told TIME that she would love to become the female version of Bruno Mars, who can pull off different music genres. And in a recent interview with PopDust, the executive producer of Thank You, Ricky Reed, opened up about the album’s musical influences, which derive from Caribbean music to country music, with a little doo-wop in between.
