Nur Suryani Mohamed Taibi needed her baby to cooperate during the 10-meter air rifle event today at the 2012 London Olympics. Unfortunately, the baby kicked. The pregnant Olympian won’t be shooting in the finals this year but the 29-year-old athlete is proud of her performance.

Yahoo reports that Suryani, who is due in three to five weeks, ended her Olympic bid at about 10 a.m. this morning. Suryani scored a perfect 10 on 32 of her 40 shots but missed the cutoff by five points to finish in 34th place.

The pregnant Olympian didn’t qualify for the finals but she didn’t blame her performance on her pregnancy.

Suryani told USA Today:

“A pregnant woman can do whatever they think they can do… The most important thing is how they think…. I don’t feel like there’s a challenge during pregnancy. I just feel like ordinary, normal people, as if I am not pregnant. I still can do whatever a normal person can do.”

Suryani did admit, however, that her pregnancy prevented her from shooting in the 50-meter event. The 50-meter event requires athletes to lie on their stomachs while they shoot, something that a pregnant Olympian probably shouldn’t do.

Suryani may not be competing for a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics but she is still very pleased with her memories. Suryani said that her daughter hasn’t been born yet but she has already competed in the Olympics.

“When the baby is born, I will tell her you are very lucky. You were not born yet, but you competed with me in the Olympic games.”
