Comedian Dane Cook is apologizing to the victims and family members affected by the Aurora theater shooting, the LA Times reports.

Cook made a joke about the shooting during his stand-up act at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles Thursday, which garnered groans and uncomfortable laughter from the audience. Cook said,

“The movie is pretty much a piece of crap. And I know that if none of that had happened I’m pretty sure that somebody in that theater, about 25 minutes in, realizing it was a piece of crap, was probably like, ‘Ugh…shoot me.’”

Comments on a YouTube video of his performance weren’t as subdued, as commenters wrote that Cook was “truly tasteless… a struggling comedian” and “a dumb b***h,” among several other choice words.

Twitter users also expressed their outrage, as users asked why and how he thought the joke was ok, or said the joke was in “poor form.” Another user said, “Making light of tragedy can be cathartic, but you can’t make light with bad jokes.”

Cook came to his senses Friday and took to his own Twitter account to apologize for the joke. He wrote,

Cook recently came to fellow comedian Daniel Tosh’s defense when the latter made a joke, also at the Laugh Factory, about an audience member getting raped. Cook said,

“If you journey through this life easily offended by other peoples words I think it’s best for everyone if you just kill yourself.”

Tosh also issued a public apology via Twitter, however, whether he was sincere or not is open to interpretation.
