On Friday, SEGA announced that free-to-play sequel Phantasy Star Online 2 has already managed to round up a rather impressive 730,000 registered users worldwide since releasing in Japan earlier this month.

According to the company, Phantasy Star Online 2 topped out at 91,513 concurrent users on July 7th, roughly 3 days after the game’s official launch. Considering that those numbers are for the Japanese version and the North American / European release is still quite a ways off, it sounds like Phantasy Star Online 2 is off to a good start.

In other good Phantasy Star Online 2-related news, the Japanese version is getting a surprising amount of content throughout the month of August alone. Beginning August 1, SEGA will be rolling out new content including new maps, new bosses, new quests, new events and quite a bit more.

SEGA has yet to stamp a firm release date for Phantasy Star Online 2 in North America and Europe, but the microtransaction-fueled sequel to the Dreamcast classic is expected to launch around January of 2013. No word on whether or not SEGA plans to launch a beta ahead of the game’s launch.
