Apple’s OS X Mountain Lion upgrade was released approximately 48 hours ago and 3 percent of Mac traffic on the web now appears to be through Mountain Lion installed systems.

Ad agency Chitika notes that Apple’s June statement shows 66 million Mac users which means the company downloaded its $20 upgrade to 2.11 million Mac owners in less than one-third of a week.

According to Chitika:

“Using this figure, if we assume that 90 percent of these users paid to upgrade, OS X Mountain Lion generated $38 million in revenue for Apple in the past 48 hours.”

Users who bought their Mac on or after June 11, 2012 were eligible for a free Mountain Lion OS update.

Putting the company’s upgrade into perspective, it took OS X Lion three months to reach 14 percent of the Mac market. Mountain Lion in the meantime is the cheapest update yet for Apple at just $19.99.

Upgrading to Apple OS X Mountain Lion does have a nice set of perks including Notes, Reminders, Game Center, and the Notification Center. The system also offers better Facebook integration, a dictation option and Airplay mirroring.

If you ‘re ready to grab a copy of Mountain Lion it can be purchased through the Mac App Store, just be warned it’s a 4.05GB upgrade so a broadband internet connection is suggested, unless you don’t mind eating through your 4G LTE data plan for the month in just a few short hours.
