Hiddleston, Tom Hiddleston: Will He Be The New James Bond?

Tom Hiddleston is one of the actors being considered to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond. If he’s chosen, fans around the world will rejoice — once they get done swooning.

Time Magazine did a poll last year of the 100 actors viewers would prefer as the new James Bond. Tom Hiddleston came in 12th out of 100, behind Idris Elba, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Jude Law, but ahead of Hugh Jackman, Chris Hemsworth, and Angelina Jolie. The Inquisitr confirmed that Tom Hiddleston is interested in the role of super-spy James Bond and would accept it if offered. He said it would be an “extraordinary opportunity.”

In the United States, Tom Hiddleston is perhaps best known for playing Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has played the trickster god in Thor, The Avengers, and Thor: The Dark World. It’s rumored he’ll reprise the role in Thor: Ragnarork, Avengers: Infinity War (Part 1), and Avengers: Infinity War (Part 2).

However, in Great Britain and the rest of Europe, the range of Hiddleston’s versatility is perhaps better known and better appreciated. He’s an award-winning actor, not just a pretty face. Loki is tall, dark, handsome, and charismatic. Tom Hiddleston is tall (at 6-foot-2-inches), but his hair varies between blond and strawberry blond when it’s not dyed for a role or covered with a wig. Although he’s undoubtedly charismatic, those who’ve met him mention his charm and unfailing courtesy first, as described in Bustle. He earned a double first in Classics at the University of Cambridge and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Tom Hiddleston has performed in horror movies, comedy, historical dramas, Shakespeare, Dickens, bio-pics, and espionage TV shows. He’s performed on stage, provided the voice for cartoons and videogames, recorded audio-books, sung, been in radio plays, and appeared in TV, movies, and commercials.

Tom Hiddleston won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Newcomer in a Play in 2008 for his role in Shakespeare’s Cymbeline. He won third prize in the Ian Charleson Awards in 2007 for his work in Othello. In 2012, he won the Empire Award for Best Male Newcomer for his role as Loki in Thor, the Glamour Award for Man of the Year, and the Rising Star Award at the Richard Attenborough U.K. Regional Film Critics’ Awards. In 2013, he won the MTV Movie Award for Best Villain and co-won the MTV Movie Award for Best Fight. He won the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Actor in 2014 for playing the title role in Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, as well as the Best Male Principal Performance Award for the Falstaff Awards. He has been nominated for dozens of other awards, and appeared twice in movies that were nominated for Oscars for Best Movie.

Tom Hiddleston has performed such diverse roles as Hank Williams in I Saw the Light(wherein he did his own singing), King Henry V in The Hollow Crown, F. Scott Fitzgerald in Midnight in Paris, Charles Darwin in Galapagos and Darwin’s Secret Notebooks, and the Great Escapo in Muppets Most Wanted. His movies and TV shows range from Disney’s The Pirate Fairy to the BBC’s Wallander to Family Guy and War Horse.

Many actors have played Ian Fleming’s James Bond: Sir Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Sir Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig, and David Niven in the movies; Barry Nelson and Christopher Cazenove on television. On radio, 007 has been portrayed by Bob Holness, Michael Jayston, and Toby Stephens. Why should Tom Hiddleston join their ranks as the next James Bond?

Empire named Tom Hiddleston as one of its 100 Sexiest Movie Stars in 2013. He came in second. As Loki, he has a legion of fans who would gladly watch him in this new role. He recently finished filming the BBC mini-series The Night Manager, based on the John le Carré book of the same name. Hiddleston speaks six languages in real life, so if James Bond need to speak to an international villain, the studio won’t need to dub Hiddleston’s dialogue. In canon, James Bond is the son of a Scottish father and a Swiss mother, raised in England. Tom Hiddleston is the son of a Scottish father and an English mother, raised in England.

Many Oscar-winning actors have portrayed James Bond. Will Tom Hiddleston join their company, and if so, will it lead to an Oscar in his future?
