The 2016 edition of India’s Pro Kabaddi League concludes Saturday, and fans can watch a live stream of the Grand Final, crowning a champion of the PKL’s third edition — the first of two seasons this year of the newly-created professional version of the ancient sport that combines elements of wrestling and tag — played in the form of a high-velocity, full contact team sport.
The 2016 Pro Kabaddi League Grand Final features a contest between the league’s top two teams — defending champions U Mumba, who finished the round robin portion of the tournament at 12-2, and Patna Pirates who ended at 10-2 with a pair of tied matches to finish a close second in the eight-team PKL, and who are going for their franchise-first PKL title.
In the semi-final round, with both matches played on Friday at the 15,000-seat Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi, India, U Mumba stopped fourth-place Bengal Warriors in a one-sided match, 41-29. And in Friday’s second semi-final, Patna smashed third-place Puneri Paltan by a 40-21 tally, to set up the dream Grand Final with the two best sides the 2016 Pro Kabaddi League has to offer clashing head-to-head for the championship.

During the round robin phase, U Mumba and Patna squared off twice, each claiming one victory. On February 6, Patna got the better of the first meeting, 46-20, behind an eight-point performance from prodigy Pardeep Narwal who staged six successful raids out of 16 attempts — and who turned 19-years-old 10 days after that first match.
But in the second meeting, on February 19, the 35th Pro Kabaddi League match of the season, U Mumba turned the tables, topping the Pirates 34-28, as 22-year-old Reeshank Devadiga led the way with eight points, six by touch, with a pair of bonus points.
The Pro Kabaddi League Grand Final, then, will also serve as the rubber match between the league’s two best teams, setting up a rivalry that is sure to carry over into the second 2016 edition of the PKL that opens in the summer.

First-time viewers of the ancient sport may find the action somewhat puzzling at first. Basically, the object of the game — which in its pro version is played on a large wrestling mat — is for a single player to “raid” the territory of the opposing team, meaning that kabaddi is essentially a contest of seven against one.
While in opponent territory, the raider attempts to touch as many of the players on the other team as possible — without getting tackled and pinned by one or several of the seven defenders.
But there’s another catch. Each raid lasts 30 seconds and the raiding player is allowed to take only one breath for the whole time. To demonstrate to the referee that he is not inhaling instead of holding his breath, the raider must chant the word “kabaddi” over and and over again until his raid is complete.
