According to KBTX, the injury occurred during Monday’s individual workouts at the school’s practice facilities and a MRI the following day confirmed the bad news.

Davis, a 6-1 guard from Charlotte, N.C., was expected to immediately contribute in the backcourt during the upcoming season as former Bulldogs PG Dee Bost, the school’s assists leader, recently graduated.

ESPN reports that Davis is expected to have surgery in August.

“As a coach, you always hate to see this happen,” MSU coach Rick Ray said in a statement. “But Jacoby is a tough kid and I know he’ll bounce back from this injury.”

SBNation points out that Davis’ injury is the latest setback for Mississippi State, which also lost star forward Arnett Moultrie (drafted in the first-round of the 2012 NBA Draft) and saw Rick Stansbury retire in March after 14 seasons as the head coach of the Bulldogs.

With Davis out for the entire 2012-2013 campaign, Mississippi State will most likely hand the point guard reigns over to Trivante Bloodman, who spent his freshman season at a JuCo in Illinois.
