Deputy Martha Lohnes Responds To An Adorable 911 ‘Emergency’ Call From 2-Year-Old [Video]

Deputy Martha Lohnes responded to a 911 emergency call from a 2-year-old girl. The toddler, having being taught how to approach law enforcement officials, had a rather adorable “emergency,” which was handled by Deputy Lohnes in an equally endearing manner.

A South Carolina sheriff’s deputy, responding to a 911 emergency call that was initiated by a toddler, found the 2-year-old with an adorable emergency. She was unable to put on her pants and made the most sensible call she could think of. The call to the Greenville County emergency dispatcher’s office came on Wednesday, local TV station WSPA reported.

When the dispatcher introduced himself, the response from the other end wasn’t clear, but it sounded like a toddler’s muffled babbling, reported DB Techno. Even after the dispatcher repeated himself, there was no clear answer. The dispatcher initially assumed it could be a prank call. He later described the 911 call sounded like a baby had accidentally dialed the emergency number and quickly hung up the phone. However, the dispatcher’s instinct and training forced him to trace the origin of the call and had a deputy dispatched to the location to investigate.

Deputy Martha Lohnes, who was in the neighborhood, was asked to respond, reported ABC News. However, when she arrived at the home to investigate, there was no sign of trouble. The quaint house seemed normal. When Lohnes knocked on the door, a man answered and appeared completely baffled. Lohnes later revealed it was the little girl’s grandfather who calmly opened the door without having the faintest clue that his granddaughter had made a phone call, let alone a 911 emergency call to the police.

It turns out the little girl, identified as Aaliyah, had been facing a wardrobe “emergency.” It turns out she was taught by her mother, Pebbles Ryan, how to initiate a 911 call. Ryan had shown Aaliyah how to dial 911 in case there was an emergency. But the lack of clarity in the communication about what constituted an actual emergency resulted in the little girl reaching out to law enforcement when she couldn’t get her pants on.

Describing the incident, Deputy Martha Lohnes said, “This little 2-year-old girl dialed 911 without her parents knowing. I show up and she comes to the door with her pants half on, saying she can’t get them on. So I sit down on the stairs and help her put pants on. And then she proceeds to ask me to pick her up and hug her…”

Apparently, after helping her put on pants, Deputy Lohnes also helped little Aaliyah put on her shoes and tied the laces as well.

Lohnes shared she has two little sisters of her own and instantly understood the gravity of the situation. Lohnes did not reprimand the toddler about her childish behavior. Instead, she praised her actions.

“I thought it was awesome that at two years old she knew to call 911 at all. I am impressed that the child, Aaliyah, knew what to do in an emergency, even if she didn’t yet understand what situations constitute an emergency. Within the busy shift of answering call after call, just one like this will totally make your day as a deputy.”

The girl’s mother was at work when she found out what her daughter had done through the child’s primary caregiver, reported Time.

Speaking about the incident, she said, “I came home to ‘Oh, the police helped your daughter put pants on.’ I was like ‘OH! Ok?’ Then she wouldn’t let any of the police leave because she wanted hugs. We have had talked to Aaliyah about 911 prior to the incident. We’ve pointed out the numbers but it completely surprised me that she actually did it.”

While not all 911 emergency calls are so adorable, there have been some pretty ludicrous reasons for which people have dialled the number.
