Kelly Clarkson Saddened By How Many People Relate To ‘Piece By Piece’

Kelly Clarkson told the Associated Press nearly one year ago that “Piece by Piece” was difficult to sing live. It hasn’t gotten any easier, as shown by Kelly’s heartbreaking performance on the American Idol stage last week. Clarkson struggled to complete the song through tears, bringing the Idol judges to tears, as well.

Kelly Clarkson wrote “Piece by Piece” for her daughter, River Rose. The powerful lyrics are based on Clarkson’s experience of being abandoned by her father when she was just a young girl. Kelly explained to the Associated Press that she gets so emotional singing the song, not because she’s sad about her past, but because she is so thankful for what she has now.

“It wasn’t hard recording ‘Piece by Piece.’ It’s proving to be harder singing live… It’s not even the sad parts of it because I’m not there. I’m not in that place anymore, like where I’m sad about it. I’m in a very forgiving place about it and everybody’s human. But I think I get really choked up because I just realize how lucky I am… And a lot of girls that grew up with their daddy issues and with not having that figure in their life, you know, take a very different road, and I just feel lucky that I’m not that girl.”

Kelly Clarkson’s American Idol performance received a huge reaction, Clarkson decided to head back to the studio to record the version her fans heard on the show. Kelly posted a picture of herself in the studio — with her very pregnant belly — saying, “No rest for the emotional!” Both versions of “Piece by Piece” currently sit in the top 10 on iTunes — the Idol version at No. 3 and the original at No. 7.

Kelly Clarkson spoke with Z100 Morning Show’s Elvis Duran about the dramatic response to “Piece by Piece.” Kelly shared that while she is grateful to be able to touch so many lives, it saddens her that so many people are able to relate to the lyrics.

“It’s kind of incredibly sad how many people relate to the message. I think that’s what’s kind of awesome but disturbing, because it’s been a really remarkable thing after singing it — the response from it. I’m excited to be a vessel for a message that touches people, but at the same time I’m like, God, I wish it didn’t touch that many people.”

True to what Kelly Clarkson shared with the Associated Press last year, she continues to use “Piece by Piece” and her experience to reflect on where she is now. Kelly went on to tell Duran that while “Piece by Piece” is a “reminder from hell,” it is also a reminder to keep her own priorities in life straight.

“It’s like that 50/50 song where you’re like, ‘Oh, that’s incredibly sad but then incredibly hopeful. It’s totally hopeful and it’s kind of good. I have that reminder in life to keep my priorities in order, so it’s cool!”

As for Kelly’s breakdown on live television, Clarkson said between it being her final time on American Idol and knowing her daughter was backstage, she was “screwed emotionally” from the start.

As reported by ET, Kelly Clarkson opened up on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Thursday, admitting she was “so embarrassed” after her tearful Idol performance. Clarkson credits her husband for pulling her back together.

“My husband [Brandon Blackstock] knows me well. I came off stage and he was like, ‘Don’t ruin it. Don’t ruin the moment.’ Because I was like, ‘It was so embarrassing! I cried the whole time.’ I didn’t realize it was going to be that bad. And we were rehearsing that day and I just couldn’t get through it. My 1-year-old [River Rose] is running around the same hallway as I was [at] 19.”

Kelly Clarkson and her husband are expecting their second child together, a boy, any day now. Before her Idol “Piece by Piece” performance, Clarkson said it was one of her final appearances before her doctor wouldn’t allow her to fly anymore.
