Baby Fight Club: Kierra Spriggs Convicted Of Child Abuse In Virginia Day Care Case

Another “baby fight club” conviction happened in the shocking Virginia daycare case. Kierra Spriggs, 26, was found guilty of the four felony counts of child cruelty and two misdemeanor assault and battery charges levied against her.

The baby fight club participant was acquitted of 14 other charges, including contributing to the delinquency of a minor charge, KHOU News reports. Many of the parents of young children who were enrolled at the Minnieland Academy Day Care Center in Woodbridge left the courtroom in tears after the verdict was read. Some of the parents were reportedly disappointed that any of the charges were dropped.

The judge in the baby fight club case opted to dismiss the three misdemeanor convictions for contributing to the delinquency of a minor because the prosecutors did not provide evidence that Spriggs was over 18 at the time the crime was committed, Fox News reports.

One unidentified parent pointed straight at the convicted baby fight club participant and said, “You are a monster.” The mom then turned her attention to the people still in the jury box and told them that none of the charges against Spriggs should have been tossed out. Kierra Spriggs was initially charged with 57 counts of child abuse.

Spriggs is the second Minnieland Academy Day Care Center workers arrested for feeding toddlers “flaming hot Cheetos” and then encouraging them to fight.

Sara Jordan, 31, was convicted for the role she played in the baby fight club last month. She was charged with a total of six misdemeanors and seven felony counts of child abuse. The prosecutor stated in court that Jordan turned on a water hose at full blast and sprayed it into the faces of the children and dumped buckets of water onto their bodies.

At least 11 toddlers under the age of 2 were named as victims in the baby fight club case. According to court records, Spriggs and Jordan also snapped rubber bands on the wrists of the children left in their care. One child had a finger bitten by a Virginia day care worker and others were reportedly tripped and had their toes stepped upon.

The baby fight club incidents are believed to have occurred over the course of eight months in 2013. Investigators from the county child protective services agency looked into the daily happenings at the Virginia day care center after concerns from parents surfaced. Some of the parents said behavior from their children coincided with the dates when the worst of the child abuse occurred at Minnieland.

According to court records, Spriggs forced twin sisters to hit each other during the baby fight club incidents.

No civil lawsuit has yet been filed against the Minnieland Academy Day Care Center, according to the attorney representing the parents of the victims. Now that both of the baby fight club participants have been convicted, any civil lawsuits that could be filed may have more standing in the eyes of the court.

Kierra Spriggs could be sentenced to up to five years in prison on each of the felony convictions and a year for each misdemeanor counts, NBC News reports. When Sarah Jordan’s sentencing hearing is conducted in May, she could end up spending just over four decades behind bars.

What do you think about the baby fight club case? Do the punishments of Kierra Spriggs and Sarah Jordan fit the crime?
