Kyle Richards Comedy Pilot Picked Up By TV Land: Will It Cause More Tension With Her Sisters Kim and Kathy?

Kyle Richards is ready to dive back into scripted TV, but could her new project cause tension with her sisters Kim and Kathy? The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star has created a comedy pilot based on her real life growing up as a child star in the 1970s, and now the project has been officially picked up by TV Land, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Kyle Richards TV pilot is currently untitled, but the half-hour single-camera dark comedy show will focus on a 40-year-old family matriarch named Bonnie Nolan, a mom of three daughters who’s coming out of a failed marriage with no means to support her family. The new series, which is inspired by Richards’ real life upbringing growing up with a driven single mom in a family of child stars, will be produced by John Wells Productions. The script for the pilot was written by John Riggi (30 Rock, Will & Grace), and Kyle Richards will co-executive produce the series.

Kyle Richards and her sisters Kim and Kathy were raised by their mom, Kathy Dugan. While all three Richards sisters had careers as child stars, middle daughter Kim was the most famous. After making her debut at just four months in a diaper commercial, Kim won co-starring roles on a steady stream of TV shows, including Nanny and the Professor, James at 16, and the Diff’rent Strokes spinoff Hello Larry. Disney’s Witch Mountain movies made Kim Richards one of the biggest child stars of the ’70s.

Kyle’s older sister Kathy had a brief acting career in the 1970s, with small guest roles on shows like Bewitched and Happy Days, before she went on to marry hotel heir Rick Hilton. Meanwhile, Kyle was best known for her roles on Little House on the Prairie and the 1978 big screen horror flick Halloween.

But since the new TV Land series will focus heavily on the mother figure, it’s unclear how much of the daughters’ child stardom will be featured in Kyle Richards’ new show. Richards’ mother Kathy Dugan was married four times and was considered to be a stage mom when her daughters were young actresses. There was also a scathing chapter in Jerry Oppenheimer’s book House of Hilton, which described the Richards matriarch as a hard partying gold-digger. While it’s unlikely that Kyle Richards will portray her childhood upbringing in an unflattering light, there have been rumors that tension has already brewed over the project.

Last year, an insider told E! News that Kathy Hilton nearly uninvited Kyle to her daughter’s wedding because of the upcoming TV project.

“Kyle was initially uninvited to Nicky’s wedding because of Kathy. There was a lot of tension over the TV pilot Kyle has in development that’s based on her life growing up with her sisters.”

In addition, Kyle’s relationship with her sister Kim has been filled with tension over the years, and they were recently estranged for nearly eight months. It will be interesting to see if the Richards sisters’ relationship is negatively affected by Kyle’s new TV show.

This isn’t the first time Kyle Richards has tried to produce a TV series about her life. In 2012 she told the Associated Press that she sold a half hour sitcom pilot about her life “being a juggling mom, wife, and being on a reality show.” At the time, Richards said she would want somebody “really funny and could capture the humor of being a mom and all the humor that comes with being on a reality show.” Kyle went on to say she’d love to see Jennifer Aniston or Jenny McCarthy play her.
