‘Ghostbusters’ 2016 Movie Trailer: Why 9,000 YouTube Dislikes In 4 Hours? [Video]

No sooner than the “World Premiere! Ghostbusters Trailer” appeared on YouTube, did the massive amount of dislikes begin filtering in for the Ghostbusters trailer. As of this writing, the Ghostbusters trailer enjoys approximately 7,000 likes and nearly 9,000 dislikes. Could it be that folks dislike the all-female cast in the Ghostbusters trailer, or is there some other reason for all the Ghostbusters trailer dislikes?

Perhaps all the dislikes have something to do with the way Leslie Jones’ character smacked Melissa McCarthy’s character at the end of the Ghostbusters trailer as she tried to deliver Melissa’s character from the ghost or demon that had possessed her. Leslie’s character borrowed a line from The Exorcist — the 1973 movie — that scared religion right into plenty of folks who realized it was based on an alleged real-life situation. According to IMDb, The Exorcist provided a memorable quote as the priests brought their crosses into the afflicted girl’s room and used the name of Christ to help her overcome her possession.

Father Merrin, Father Damien Karras: “The Power of Christ compels you!”

The Ghostbusters movie trailer features a similar line, but Jones’ character screams, “The power of pain compels you,” instead of “The power of Christ.”

In The Exorcist, the afflicted main character performed her infamous “spider walk” that terrified millions of movie lovers when the scene was added to a re-release of the film. She violently projectile vomited with even more force than normally seen. She also performed a 360-degree head-spinning move, and that’s something the Ghostbusters movie borrowed for their trailer.

The YouTube channel of The Ellen Show uploaded the Ghostbusters movie trailer on March 3 with a description for the Ghostbusters movie trailer that hearkens back to the original question echoed by Ray Parker, Jr., in the original Ghostbusters movie theme song. That’s when Parker asked who would a person call when there’s something strange going on in their neighborhood, or if there’s something weird occurring and it didn’t look good. Ghostbusters! That was the natural refrain sung over and over again in that theme song.

“Who you gonna call? It’s Girls vs. Ghouls in the much-anticipated film starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones — watch the full-length trailer here!”

The “Exclusive! A Brand New Finding Dory Trailer” published to the same YouTube channel merely one day before the Ghostbusters movie trailer fared much better in the ratings. Up to 1,870,645 views in one day, that trailer currently enjoys more than 45,000 likes and only 321 dislikes on YouTube.

“Have you seen her? Watch the new full length trailer, following the famous fish with a big heart and a bad memory, here first!”

So what do people hate about the Ghostbusters movie trailer so much that they are hitting that “thumbs-down” dislike button a-plenty? A look at the comments on YouTube beneath the Ghostbusters movie trailer tells the tale. Apparently, it’s not the all-female cast featured in the Ghostbusters movie trailer that’s drawing all of the dislikes, but it is also the Ghostbusters movie script that’s turning people off and driving them to dislike the movie.

“As much as I love the idea of the all girl Ghostbuster team.. I much prefer the idea of talented writers.”

Some do go so far as to blame the female cast, but some humorously don’t like the monsters.

“The monsters looks like they are from the Scooby Doo movie. It sucks.”

Wiig, McCarthy, McKinnon, and Jones are fan favorites, hailing from SNL. Whether their reboot of Ghostbusters will endure past all the dislikes remains to be seen.

“With paranormal activity on the rise, a Columbia University academic, her ghost-chasing friend, the friend’s business partner, and an MTA employee join forces to bust ghosts and save New York.”

With a release date of July 15, Ghostbusters has plenty more time to gain likes and dislikes on YouTube.
