Chrissy Teigen ‘Didn’t Anticipate Backlash’ For Choosing Gender Of Baby

Chrissy Teigen recently revealed that she and her husband, John Legend, chose the gender of their baby, who is due this spring.

“Not only am I having a girl, but I picked the girl from her little embryo,” Teigen told People Magazine. “I picked her and was like, ‘Let’s put in the girl.'”

Teigen also revealed why she chose to implant the girl embryo. Chrissy said she wanted John to get to experience the bond a father shares with his daughter.

“I think I was most excited and allured by the fact that John would be the best father to a little girl. That excited me,” she explained. “It excited me to see … just the thought of seeing him with a little girl. I think he deserves a little girl. I think he deserves that bond. A boy will come along. We’ll get there too, so it’s not like we really have to pick. But he definitely is very lucky to have a little girl. And this girl is going to be so completely lucky to have John as her papa — it’s crazy!”

Choosing a baby’s gender during IVF is not unheard of and is actually quite common, which is why Teigen didn’t anticipate the backlash she would receive for her choice.

“I didn’t realize that this is so not really talked about,” Teigen told Robin Roberts during Tuesday’s episode of Good Morning America. “In my world it is, because everyone I know has gone through this.” She added: “I didn’t anticipate all of the people that have never heard of such a thing before.”

“We’re happy with our decision, and we’re proud of it,” Teigen continued. “We’re glad we’re living in a time that we could do such a thing. We definitely didn’t anticipate any kind of backlash from it.”

Although it is a common practice in Teigen’s world to choose your baby’s gender, social media users were quick to lash out at the supermodel for her decision. Teigen tried to ignore the backlash, but eventually, she had had enough of the harassment and took to her Twitter account to set the record straight.

“[S]top looking HERE for s*** to be mad at. there are so many other things that deserve your outrage,” Teigen tweeted to her haters. “[F]rom reading everything tonight, i think i made a mistake in thinking people understood the process better than they do, which is my fault..”

“[W]e didn’t create a little girl. we had multiple embryos. girls and boys,” Chrissy continued. “[W]e simply chose to put in a female first (and second)…we didn’t ‘throw away’ anything and still would love to have more of both in the future. hard to explain such a complicated process here.you’d be surprised at how many people you know go through this. also every doctor knows the sex of the embryos, it isn’t some grand secret.”

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend have been together for years, and they started trying to have a baby several years ago. Despite their efforts, however, Chrissy never got pregnant. Eventually, the couple, who desperately wanted to start a family together, decided to seek fertility treatment and announced in October that they were expecting their first bundle of joy. Although Chrissy and John decided to have a girl this time, they both want more children and said they would have a boy later using IVF.

“I’m excited to see what he is going to do because I think we’ll have two very different styles,” Teigen said. “I’m excited to see that part of John; We’ve been together so long, and sometimes we look at each other and we’re like, ‘I know everything about you and you know everything about me,’ but we have no idea what we’re going to be like as parents. I think it’ll be really fun. I’m excited.”
