Bangladesh faces the biggest test of the 2016 Asia Cup T20 cricket championship when the Tigers face arch-rival Pakistan on Wednesday in a match that could determine which of the two teams moves on to the final against India on Sunday. But the situation became far more complicated for Bangladesh as they shoot for only their second trip to the Asia Cup final, with a serious piece of injury news on Tuesday.
The Bangladesh 20-year-old left-arm pace sensation Mustafizur Rahman, who was forced to sit out the last two games of a bilateral series with Zimbabwe and then the entire Pakistan Super League franchise cricket competition earlier this month has been ruled out of Wednesday’s Pakistan match — as well as the final, if Bangladesh gets there — citing a strained muscle in his side.
“Mustafiz complained of discomfort after Sunday’s match against Sri Lanka,” Bangladesh team trainer Bayjedul Islam Khan. “An MRI scan was done today and the report from the radiologist confirmed a Grade One side strain on the right. He is under conservative treatment and rest for next 48 hours. Following that the rehab will begin. We are expecting that he will make a quick recovery and resume bowling soon.”
Highlights of the Bangladesh victory over Sri Lanka on Saturday can be seen in the video below.

Bangladesh must play in the qualifying round of the T20 World Cup, meaning that their first match comes against the Netherlands on March 9 — just three days after the Asia Cup Final. Whether Mustafizur will be ready to bowl by that date remains unclear.
While the loss of their star bowler comes as a blow to Bangladesh hopes to win their first championship, the Tigers at the same time expect to get a shot in the arm to their batting attack, with the return of opener Tamim Iqbal who returns to the team’s XI after missing the first three matches of the Asia Cup due to paternity leave.
If Pakistan wins the match, they must go on to defeat Sri Lanka on Friday to insure their trip to the final match and another chance to take on India — who humiliated Pakistan on Saturday, holding their rivals to a mere 83 runs on their way to a five wicket victory with 27 balls remaining.

Stakes are high for Pakistan, who faced a storm of outrage among their fans and former players back home after the India defeat. A definitive win over United Arab Emirates did little to calm the tempers of Pakistan supporters.
“Pakistan team has been performing poorly and nothing is being taken seriously,” said former Coach Mohsin Khan Tuesday, becoming the latest voice to rip the team’s performance in the Asia Cup.
“The national team has suffered greatly in the series against England, New Zealand and in Asia Cup, we now were humiliated by India. Losing and winning is part of the game. But Pakistan’s talented team is playing very poor cricket. There is no accountability of players, coaching staff and others who are at the helm of affairs of national cricket,” Khan added.
But Pakistan can redeem themselves with a win over Asia Cup hosts Bangladesh and a win over Sri Lanka that would give the team a chance at an Asia Cup trophy and perhaps more important to the Pakistan fans, a chance at revenge over India.
