A pair of cheetah cubs made their public debut today at the National Zoo in Washington. The three-month-old cubs posed for a photo-shoot for the media this morning. They are scheduled to make their public debut this Saturday.

The two cubs, who were born via an emergency cesarean section in May and have been hand-raised by zookeepers, haven’t been named yet. According to Wtop, the two cheetah cubs will be named after the fastest American athletes at the 2012 London Olympics in the 100-meter dash. The boy will be named after the fastest American male and the girl cub will be named after the fastest possible female.

That means that the boy may be named Justin, Tyson or Ryan and the female could be named Carmelita, Tianna or Allyson.

The zoo writes in a statement:

“The two 3-month-old cheetah cubs at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and the Olympic athletes have one thing in common: starting this week they will be showing off their speed, agility and raw, physical prowess. And soon they will have even more in common with the Olympians… The decision to name the cubs after the fastest Americans is part of a broader National Zoo Games campaign to celebrate the Zoo’s finest animaletes.”

And the cheetah cubs will grow to be fine animaletes. An adult cheetah can reach speeds of nearly 80 mph.

Here’s a video of the two cheetah cubs at the National Zoo.
