Not only do 48% of Americans admit to drinking at least one soda every single day, most of those soda drinkers average 2.6 glasses per day with 28% of drinkers consuming one glass and 20% drinking two or more glasses.

The consumption poll was conducted by Gallup from July 9-12 and marks the first soda consumption tally for the data collection agency.

According to the groups finding soda drinkers not only consume more sugar, they tend to list themselves as overweight. The study found almost no weight differential between moderate soda drinkers (one glass a day) and heavy soda drinkers (2 or more glasses). Researchers believe heavy soda drinkers may be more likely to consume diet soda which helps control additional weight gain.

The study also found that “nonwhites” are more likely to choose a soda over a coffee. Gallup reports:

“Men and women are about equally likely to drink coffee, however, by 69% to 45%, whites are much more likely than nonwhites to drink it. And there is a significant age skew, with coffee drinking much more prevalent among middle-aged and older Americans than among those aged 18 to 34.

The pattern is somewhat the inverse when it comes to soda. In line with higher rates of obesity among blacks and Hispanics, soda drinking is slightly more common among nonwhites than whites. Young adults aged 18 to 34 and men are also slightly more likely to consume soda than their counterparts.”

It is not all bad news for American consumers, executives in the soda industry have recently reported sharp declines in carbonated beverages, although sugary drinks continue to be favored among Americans.

Gallup surveyed 1,014 adults aged 18 and older who lived in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.
