Katie Holmes Shades Marriage Questions In New Interview: Rumors Tom Cruise Is Considering Moving To New York Grow

As Katie Holmes settles into her new life in New York: preparing for her recently won role in Pulitzer prize winner Theresa Rebeck’s dark comedy Dead Accounts and enrolling daughter Suri in a Catholic school, more tea-leaf reading of yet another pre-divorce Holmes’ interview is currently doing the rounds on the Internet.

After Holmes’ change-is-in-the-air quotes in Elle’s August issue earlier this month,

“He has been Tom Cruise for 30 years. I know who I am and where I am and where I want to go, so I want to focus on that,” and “I’m starting to come into my own. It’s like a new phase” – make way for more Holmes’ zingers in C Magazine’s (California Style) chat with the actress.

The September issue cover features a resolute-looking Holmes and was shot seven days before she filed for divorce on June 28. But the actual interview took place one day before the bombshell June 29 announcement.

And there’s quite a backstory.

C Magazine’s senior editor Kelsey McKinnon who met Holmes for the interview hasn’t been slow to dish. The way McKinnon tells it, it was obvious that all was not well in Chez Cruise.

“Going back over the tapes, there were signs,“ says McKinnon. “Holmes was certainly very aware of herself, laying a couple of cards on the table but never showing her whole hand.”

McKinnon continues,

“Most noticeably, the one name decisively absent from her lexicon: Tom Cruise. She never actually refers to him by name over pages and pages of transcription.”

One of the things Holmes does say in the interview is this,

“I’m ready to take on some more challenging roles,” said the 33-year-old newly single mom. “I feel like I worked so much at such a young age that I really wanted to have life experiences. I feel more balanced and like I have more to bring to the table. I always felt like I wanted to catch up [in my personal life] to what I was doing [in my career].”

McKinnon also says when Holmes was asked if having Suri had brought her closer to her (then) husband, the actress replied,

“I don’t know. I mean […] I don’t know. People have been having babies a long time.”

Not exactly gushing then.

In retrospect, Holmes’ divorce and her clear intent to re-establish herself both acting-wise and with her fashion label Holmes & Yang really does say all that needs to be said about her now kaput marriage. But will that stop the tea-leaf reading?

Doubtful.

Meanwhile several media outlets are reporting that Tom Cruise – currently in London prepping for new film All You Need is Kill – is considering moving to New York to be nearer to his youngest child.

Unnamed sources (are there any other kind?) toldPage Six magazine,

“Tom’s looking for a new home here. He wants a fresh start. He doesn’t want to go back to the East Village apartment where he was living with Katie.”

While another apparently said,

“He [Tom] doesn’t want to have to deal with going through a lobby, and people outside all the time. He also wants to have a nice amount of space for Suri, with outdoor space. That could mean high-end luxury apartments, but he’s also looking at houses outside of the city or in gated communities.”

As always, time will tell.
