Lindsey Vonn Suffers Another Knee Injury, Still Manages To Come In 13th Place

Lindsey Vonn suffered what could have been a devastating knee injury over the weekend during the World Cup event in Andorra, but the professional athlete tended to her wounds and then came back to the slopes, determined to finish.

Vonn was reportedly taken off the slopes on a sled with a hairline fracture in her knee on Saturday, the latest in a string of injuries to the same area that has seen her airlifted away from races before. Twenty-four hours later, however, she returned to finish the competition and ended up coming in 13th overall after shooting from the gate with the fastest time in the opening portion.

“Drained my knee a few times and it’s feeling a little better. Going to go up on the hill and see how it feels. Wish me luck!!” she wrote on Facebook before returning.

Vonn later took to Twitter to share a photo of the knee braces she’ll have to wear on both legs, calling herself a “bionic woman,” and let her fans know that she’ll have to have an MRI.

Following the scan, Lindsey Vonn said she had a lot of blood in the wounded area and was planning on getting as much rest as possible to try and get healthy.

“I’ve made scans, I know I have a fracture in my tibia plateau. There is a lot of blood in it. It’s a balloon. I hope with a few days rest and therapy, it will be OK.”

It’s not the first time Vonn has seen a setback due to injury during a major event. In 2013, while competing at the Alpine World Cup event in Val d’Isere, France, Vonn said her injured right knee caused her to miss a gate and veer off course.

“I didn’t hurt myself more than I’m already hurt. Unfortunately I have no (anterior cruciate ligament) and it gave out on me. My knee is loose and it’s not stable and that’s the way it’s going to be from here on out. I just have to get used to it,” Vonn said.

At the time, she said it was a flare-up of an old injury that had been aggravated by a crash at practice, and noted that she would have to be careful about how many more runs she made.

“I just need to be more careful of how many races I do. I’m at risk of doing more damage to my knee and my meniscus. So I’m going to play it safe and race really minimal races.”

Lindsey Vonn has had a busy couple of months. Not only did she appear alongside Ronda Rousey wearing nothing but body paint in the newest Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, the athlete let her emotions get the best of her earlier this month after finishing second in a World Cup event and took a hammer to her sponsored skis on video, which she posted on Facebook. Vonn issued an apology, saying she should have gone boxing to get rid of her frustration.

“I made a mistake and everyone does that. I am human. I had a lot of emotions yesterday and I should have just done boxing with my trainer,” Vonn said during an interview earlier this month.
