Aaron Berry is no longer a Detroit Lions player after the cornerback was arrested in the early Saturday morning hours. The arrest was Berry’s second in a month and speculation began swirling about his release almost immediately after the arrest was revealed.

Berry was arrested in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on three charges of simple assault and the Lions wasted no time on Monday morning, announcing his immediate release from the teams roster.

Upon his arrest Cpl. Kyle Gautsch of the Harrisburg Police Department said witnesses claimed “a weapon allegedly brandished during the incident.”

Berry was also arrested on June 23 on charges of DUI, failure to stop and render aid in an accident and various other counts.

Following the most recent arrest Corky Goldstein, Berry’s lawyer said in a statement:

“I would just hope that everybody just holds their judgment on this matter. There’s a lot more to this situation. … I know Aaron is very upset over this whole situation. Let’s give the opportunity for all the facts to come out.”

A judge could decide to reverse Berry’s “diversionary program” decision stemming from his June arrest because of new charges filed against him.

In a statement on its website Sunday afternoon the Detroit Lions said:

“We are extremely disappointed by the reports involving Aaron Berry. We are currently gathering more information and will have further comment when appropriate.”

The NFL has had almost 30 players arrested during the off-season and the Lions have been responsible for several of those arrests. With the team likely facing NFL fines for player misconduct cutting Aaron Berry might lessen those fines.

Also arrested from the Detroit Lions roster this off-season were Nick Fairley and Mikel Leshoure.

Do you think cutting Aaron Berry was the responsible thing for the Detroit Lions to do?
