Ladies’ Code Returns After 2014 Tragedy With ‘Galaxy’ — How Can K-Pop Group Honor RiSe And EunB In Comeback?

One of the more popular K-pop girl groups to form after the first decade was Ladies’ Code. Developed under the label of Polaris Entertainment, Ashley, RiSe, EunB, Sojung, and Zuny made their debut as a five-member group back in February 2013 with the mini-album Code#01 Bad Girl, featuring the track “Bad Girl.” Later that year, Ladies’ Code followed up with another mini-album Code#2 Pretty Pretty, featuring the track “Pretty Pretty.” Both featured tracks were hits and so was Ladies’ Code.

Ladies’ Code would continue their popularity into 2014. They were sitting on top of the world until tragedy struck. On September 3, 2014, Ladies’ Code was involved in a serious vehicular crash. The van they were using was going 37 kilometers over the 100 km/h speed limit. Rainy conditions made the road very slippery, which caused the driver to lose control. The van hydroplaned, skid several times, crashed into a protective wall, than rolled multiple times. Ashley and Zuny sustained minor injuries, EunB was declared dead on arrival. RiSe and Sojung sustained the most injuries. Sojung would eventually recover. Sadly, RiSe would pass away four days later, succumbing to her injuries.

Now, 17 months after that tragic event, Ladies’ Code has made their return with their track “Galaxy.” What the K-pop community wants to know, is how will the surviving trio honor EunB and RiSe with their comeback?

Prior to their comeback, rumors of Ladies’ Code making their comeback started to circulate earlier this month, as reported by KMusic. Eventually, Polaris Entertainment would confirm their comeback with a teaser for their upcoming album Myst3ry. They would follow up with the release for the album’s title track “Galaxy.” See the music video below.

For fans who identify themselves as “Lavely” (the official group for Ladies’ Code), the track came off as a surprise. The track is good, but it is so different for the tracks they performed previously. If one were to listen to “Bad Girl,” “Kiss Kiss,” or any of Ladies’ Code’s past tracks, it would be noticed they are more upbeat. “Galaxy” is nothing like that, as it takes a more melancholy approach. Some might say it is a new direction for Ladies’ Code, one in which they separate themselves from the days when they were five members. Others believe the track is an expression of how Ladies’ Code feels now they are three members. As a matter of fact, the track’s expression may not be far off from the latter theory, as Ashley of Ladies’ Code recently revealed it was very hard for them to accept the absence of EunB and RiSe, as reported by AllKpop.

“We had a lot of concerns during all that time. It was hard for us to accept that the two of them were no longer by our side, and it was hard to decide whether we should stand on stage again or give up… While a long period of time passed on, the three of us were able to rely on one another even more and become more cemented.”

As for Ladies’ Code honoring EunB and RiSe, the band is actually doing it with their comeback, a belief that Timmy Dee of Soompi made in his original article. Ashley, Sojung, and Zuny had one of the most tragic experiences they will ever experience in their life. Since it happened as part of their K-pop idol careers, it would be understandable if they never returned to the studio or the stage ever again. It takes a lot of heart, as well as a lot of personal strength, to comeback from such a tragedy and all K-pop fans, not just “Lavely,” are behind them all the way this time.

Ladies’ Code’s newest album, Myst3ry, is already available for purchase either in-store or digitally at certain locations and sites. Due to the sensitive nature of the K-pop idol group’s return, Ladies’ Code will concentrate more on the musical aspects of the release and keep their variety show appearances limited. It is up to the K-pop community to spread the word of their newest album.
