WWE Announces AJ Styles Vs. Kevin Owens Intercontinental Title Match For MSG Show

When Kevin Owens threw AJ Styles out of the Royal Rumble match, many assumed that it was just a matter of time before the two men had a one-on-one match. Some even thought that it would take place at this spring’s WrestleMania 32.

Owens only furthered the speculation that a match between himself and Styles would take place at some point in the near-future shortly after he won the Intercontinental Championship, as he tweeted that Styles had better stay away from his Intercontinental Title.

Now it looks like Styles and Owens will be wrestling each other, but it won’t be at WrestleMania 32.

WWE is currently advertising Styles vs. Owens for the live event on March 25 at Madison Square Garden. The Intercontinental Championship will be on the line in the match

Unless something changes, then the match will be AJ Styles’ first crack at singles gold in WWE. It doesn’t seem likely that he’ll win just because WWE never does title-changes at live events. As of right now, there are no plans to make this live event a WWE Network special, although there is a chance it will be, as the show will be labeled “Daniel Bryan Appreciation Night.”

Kevin Owens wasn’t used at this past Monday’s RAW, which led many to question if he’ll be doing anything at WrestleMania 32. Owens quickly answered those questions via Twitter, saying that “KO Mania is still on.” So, it looks like he will be doing something at WrestleMania.

The fact that Owens and Styles are wrestling each other at a WWE live event suggests that the two may be working with each other at WrestleMania 32, which could be where Styles ends up winning the Intercontinental Championship.

As of right now, Styles is in a tag-team with Chris Jericho. But there hasn’t been anything that has suggested that it’ll be a long-term thing, or that the two will be teaming up at WrestleMania. Furthermore, it does seem unlikely that Jericho would come back just to be part of a random tag-team match at WrestleMania 32, because “Y2J” has always said that if he were to come back for a WrestleMania match, he’d want to do something that was “Chris Jericho-worthy,” meaning a main-event level singles match.

Apparently, there’s been some talk that WWE wants to do a multi-person ladder match for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania, which is exactly what they did last year. So, if they do end up doing that, then both Styles and Jericho may end up being involved, along with Kevin Owens, Dolph Ziggler, The Miz, and possibly either Tyler Breeze or Ryback.

Last year’s Intercontinental Championship ladder match kicked off WrestleMania with a bang, and it got the fans fired up because Daniel Bryan ended up being crowned the new IC Champion. It’s likely that WWE wants to re-use that idea and have Styles win the title so the show will get off to a hot start.

You should expect to see Styles and Owens in the ring with each other on WWE television at some point, regardless of what the plan is for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 32. It’s a match that WWE’s hardcore audience has been dying to see since Styles arrived in WWE, and it’s a match that, barring injuries, seems inevitable.

But for now, the only way you can see Owens vs. Styles is if you’re at Madison Square Garden on March 25.
