Blackjacks In The U.S. Go Crazy When ‘MTBD’ By 2NE1 Leader CL Plays On New Fox Comedy ‘Lucifer’

Presently in the Korean music industry, one of the most popular K-pop idol girl groups is 2NE1. Such a statement does seem peculiar given the fact 2NE1 has not released any new music ever since they went on hiatus in the shadow of group member Bom’s drug scandal. However, it does not negate the truth of their popularity today because K-pop fans, especially Blackjacks (devoted fans of 2NE1), are keeping them alive.

In order to keep 2NE1 in the limelight, Blackjacks are thoroughly following the solo careers of each individual member. Though not much can be said about members Minzy and Bom, Dara and CL have been really busy with their personal endeavors. With Dara, she now has a budding Korean acting career. Utilizing her past acting credentials on Filipino shows for ABS-CBN, Dara started out with cameo and supporting roles, primarily on My Love From The Star and Producer, K-dramas in which Kim Soo Hyun plays the lead. Now Dara is being cast for main lead roles mostly for web dramas. Her first web drama Missing Korea was a major success, and now Dara has been cast as the lead for the K-movie adaption of Begin Again.

CL, on the other hand, is concentrating on a solo career in the American music industry. Though she is often compared to Nicki Minaj, CL has created her own path with tracks like “Doctor Pepper” and “Hello B*****s.” Yet CL actually started her solo career in Korea, and one of her Korean solo tracks is getting a lot of attention because it was recently featured in an American dramatic comedy series. Just recently, CL’s “MTBD” was featured on Lucifer, and Blackjacks went crazy when they found out.

CL’s track “MTBD” was used for the fifth episode of Lucifer, a new dramatic comedy series on Fox. According to KpopStarz, “MTBD” opened the episode. It continued to play as the episode led to a fashion show featuring the shoes made by fictional designer Benny Choi. The episode makes cuts from one set of models to others as they strut around in minimalist futuristic clothing while carrying baseball bats, which may or may not be a nod to the costume design 2NE1 is known for.

Having “MTBD” play during a fashion show may also be a nod to CL herself. Earlier this month, Francisco Costa held a fashion show which showcased his Fall 2016 Collection. According to Vogue, CL was sitting on the front row, admiring Costa’s designs. Apparently, that show was not the only one she attended, as CL continued to enjoy New York Fashion Week, sitting in the front row of Calvin Klein’s Spring 2016 fashion show, too. “MTBD” playing may also be promotion for CL’s upcoming release, an extended play (EP) titled Lifted. So far, only one song has been teased, and that is “Hello B*****s.” Other songs to be on the EP, either official or rumored, include “Birthday,” “Fallin’,” “Lifted,” “One,” and possibly “Doctor Pepper.”

As for Lucifer, the new dramatic comedy starring Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar and Lauren German as Chloe Decker started out strong with 7.16 million viewers watching the pilot. Since then, the show has declined to five million viewers on average with the latest episode, the one featuring “MTBD” by CL, being the lowest at four million viewers. The reason for its sudden decline is blamed on the show’s hackneyed cop procedural format, which has been overly used to the point of boredom in Hollywood. It also does not help the show that One Million Moms petitioned to prevent the show’s launch because it “glorified Satan as a caring, likable person in human flesh.”
