Lorde Fans Still Waiting For New Album Three Years After ‘Pure Heroine’

Lorde hasn’t released an album since her highly successful 2013 hit Pure Heroine, and fans have been waiting none too patiently for a new album ever since.

Lorde burst onto the music scene in 2013 after she released the song “Royals” on June 3, 2013. Originally off of her The Love Club EP, it was also included on her debut studio album, Pure Heroine. “Royals” was one of the biggest songs in 2013, popular with fans and critics. Over the past three years, it has sold over 10 million copies. Lorde went on to win Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Appearance for “Royals” at the 2014 Grammy Awards.

Other singles from the album Pure Heroine included “Tennis Court” and “Team.” Lorde’s first album has sold over 3 million copies. Rumors swirled that 2015 would be the year for new Lorde material. Yet those reports went unfulfilled, leaving fans yearning for the singer to drop her second studio album.

Since the massive success of Pure Heroine, Lorde has dabbled in music but has so far not come close to releasing a new album. Lorde provided a song for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 album, “Yellow Flicker Beat,” as well as being involved in curating the album.

There has been rampant speculation that 2016 will be the year that Lorde releases a new album, but details have been scarce. Lorde teased fans on New Year’s Eve when she posted on Twitter, “whispered the album name to my mum in the car today.” Since then, Lorde has been noticeably silent on the subject.

What has Lorde been doing then, if not recording her album? Hanging out with Taylor Swift, of course. During 2015’s Golden Globe awards, Inverse reports that Lorde hung out with Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez. Later that year, in July, Lorde joined new best friend Taylor Swift on her 1989 tour. During a stop in Washington, D.C., Lorde took to the stage to perform a duet of “Royals” with Taylor Swift.

Lorde was also too busy to record her new album as she took in New York Fashion Week in September, 2015, attending the Kanye West show for his Yeezy Season 2 line. Lorde was sat between Kourtney Kardashian and Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci.

Also up in 2015 for Lorde was a cover shoot for Vogue Australia. Lorde was photographed and interviewed for the music issue. The topic of a second album came up and Lorde discussed her music style.

“I definitely love writing pop music, but in terms of structure and formula—you know it, and then you know it. I’m probably always going to return to that kind of structure, but it’s nice to branch out a bit.”

According to the interview, Lorde is in the process of writing material for her second album. Although she has recorded some songs, the plans to produce her next album are still in the air. As for what will be the inspiration for the new album by Lorde, chances are it will be her ever changing lifestyle and her rise to fame.

“I’ve been writing traditional pop songs, and recording them, and then making the instrumental equivalent—I’m just mucking around with stuff… Obviously, if I were to come out with a record about living in my town and doing the things that we always did, that wouldn’t be accurate. I’ve always wanted someone in my position to write about what it’s like to be in my position”

With no word yet on a release date for a new album, or even the confirmation of an album in 2016, everything around Lorde has turned to speculation. Rolling Stone, for its part though, seems pretty sure that a new album from Lorde will happen as they have listed her album one of the most highly anticipated albums of 2016.

Let’s hope that Rolling Stone has it right and 2016 will indeed see a new album from Lorde.
