Recording Academy President Neil Portnow Responds To Kanye West Rant — Will Yeezy Help Make Grammys ‘Culturally Relevant’?

Kanye West went on another rant on Twitter, this time calling out Recording Academy CEO/president Neil Portnow in a series of tweets on Wednesday. It seems that Portnow might actually give Kanye the meeting he requested after the Twitter rant, which took just under two hours to garner a response. Kanye meant business with at least three dozen tweets talking about the relevance of the Grammys when he demanded a sitdown with Portnow. Apparently, Kanye feels like the Grammys needs fixing and he is just the one to fix the popular awards show.

“Hi Grammys this is the most important living artist talking,” Kanye tweeted along with a dozens more tweets proclaiming that the Grammys need him. Apparently Yeezy believes that if he’s not at the Grammys next year, “there will be no show.” Then West did it again, he interrupted someone else’s win to let everyone know who he thought should be the winner. At least, he didn’t storm up on stage and take the microphone out of their hands this time, right?

“I don’t want to just fix the awards for me but I want to fix it for Dexter Navy who directed A$AP Rocky’s LSD video,” Kanye tweeted according to Billboard. “Everybody with any form of taste knows that was the best video of the year!” We’re having flashbacks of Kanye’s MTV Video Music Awards rant where he took the mic from Taylor Swift plus last year at the Grammys when he made a fool of himself by not even knowing who Beck was. Nevermind all that though, the Grammys need saving and Kanye wants a sit down with Neil Portnow right now.

Much to everyone’s amazement, Neil Portnow responded to Kanye West and accepted his request for a sit-down. Portnow, using the Grammys Twitter account, responded to Kanye and said, “@kanyewest, I’m not on Twitter but just hit me up and let’s have that sit down. – Neil Portnow.” We can only imagine what the two fixtures in music will say to each other once they are face to face.

Kanye thinks the Grammys are geared toward a certain crowd and that certain performers aren’t offered the privilege of performing during the awards show because of their style or their look. His example was Future, who admittedly is blowing up the music scene right now and is constantly breaking music records. Apparently, he was not given the chance to perform at the Grammys this year for whatever reason and Kanye is upset about it. Apparently, the self-proclaimed greatest rapper of all time forgot about Kendrick Lamar (in more ways than one) because he performed at the Grammys and won multiple awards.

Why is Kanye taking up the plight of rappers who are often not celebrated at awards shows like the Grammys? Maybe he just wants a few friends in his corner after the constant Twitter rants that have many fans wondering if Kanye has lost his mind. What we do know is that West has a lot of respect for A$AP Rocky, Future, and Young Thug, all of whom he wants to see celebrated at the Grammys, which he claims has lost cultural relevance for shutting out some of the most popular rappers.

Kanye also used his Twitter soapbox to let everyone know that there is a new Yeezy album coming in the summer. It’s unclear if West is putting out another album so soon because he just has that much music or if he’s trying to make up for the mixed reception for The Life of Pablo. Do you think Kanye West has lost his mind, or is he really just a misunderstood genius?
