George Zimmerman may have hoped he would garner sympathy by appearing on Fox’s Hannity Wednesday and giving his first media interview, but he actually unwittingly handed the prosecution quite a bit of case material. What were you thinking, George?

Zimmerman’s interview, in which he apologized to the parents of Trayvon Martin and admitted that he has few regrets about the shooting, has been entered by the prosecution as evidence against him in his upcoming murder trial, reports ABC. In an hour-long sit-down with Fox’s Sean Hannity, a calm and collected Zimmerman said that he did not regret carrying a gun nor following 17-year-old Martin on the night of the latter’s death. “I feel that it was all God’s plan,” Zimmerman said. When Hannity asked if there was “anything you might do differently,” Zimmerman responded, “No Sir.”

Of course, Zimmerman later clarified that “I do wish there was something, anything I could have done, that would have put me in the position that I wouldn’t have to take his life,” merely stating that he had misunderstood the earlier question. Still, Newsweek opines that Zimmerman’s interview as a whole will be damning in his upcoming trial.

The prosecution is reportedly thrilled with Zimmerman’s decision to give the interview. Though they are not surprised, they said that Zimmerman didn’t do himself any favors in the interview. “He has impeached himself publicly, this is going to be a huge problem for him … and the prosecutors must be extremely pleased,” said a legal analyst not involved with the case.

Zimmerman’s comment that Trayvon Martin’s shooting was all a part of “God’s plan” has particularly drawn the ire of critics, reports the Orlando Sentinel. Not only have Martin’s parents rejected the sentiment (along with Zimmerman’s apology), one state attorney put her own spin on it as well. She allowed that Zimmerman’s comment didn’t come off the way he intended it to, but offered, “From my perspective, God sent you a messenger to stay in your truck,” she said, referring to the police dispatcher who warned Zimmerman against following Martin prior to the shooting.

“You didn’t listen,” she said.
