Sam Smith Shows Off 40-Pound Weight Loss At Grammys: ‘I’ve Just Not Eaten Like A Pig Anymore’

Sam Smith showed up at the Grammy Awards Monday night 40 pounds lighter, and the formerly corpulent crooner attributes his weight loss to “not eating like a pig any more,” ET Online is reporting.

Smith, who won four Grammys at the 2015 awards, didn’t win any awards Monday night. Instead, he was on hand to present the Best New Artist award to Meghan Trainor. But it was his slimmed-down appearance, both at the red carpet ceremonies and during the show, that got fans wondering if Sam might be sick.

The good news is that Sam Smith is not sick — he’s just eating better. As the Daily Mail explains, Sam has lost three stone (42 pounds) simply by watching what he eats. Specifically, he says, he’s been sticking to the rules in Amelia Freer’s book, Eat, Nourish, Grow.

“Food is the big thing for me. I’m moving around all the time, but I just love food. I still love it. It’s going to be a battle for the rest of my life. I mean it’s not like this horrible diet that kills me. When I want to eat something bad I do it, but I’ve just got to stay on top of it, which is tough. I just love fried chicken and cheese!”

The “Stay With Me Singer” has long had a problem with his weight.

Smith, who is openly gay, says that remarks about his weight are more stinging than comments about his sexuality.

“If someone called me fat, that affects me way more than someone calling me a f****t, I think just because I’ve accepted that. If someone calls me a f****t, it’s like, I am gay and I’m proud to be gay so there’s no issues there. If someone calls you fat, that’s something I want to change.”

Sam Smith, born in London in 1992, was already the subject of controversy long before he became an international singing sensation, according to Biography. At age 15, Smith had recorded two songs that had gone nowhere, but he got some unexpected free press when his mother, a successful banker, got fired from her job for promoting her son’s music on company time.

Smith’s big break came in 2012, when the aspiring singer was featured on the Disclosure song “Latch.”

As Biography explains, Smith’s lilting falsetto and stripped-down vocals resonated with fans, and made “Latch” a top hit.

Smith followed up his success as a backup vocalist for Disclosure with his own track, “Lay Me Down.” He continued to do featured vocalist work for other artists while he tried to make a name for himself as a solo artist.

Sam Smith became an international sensation, almost overnight, in 2014 with the release of his album, In The Lonely Hour, and its Top-Ten hit, “Stay With Me.” It was at the height of his popularity when Smith announced to the world that he’s gay. He would go on to win four Grammy Awards: Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album (In The Lonely Hour), Record of the Year and Song of the Year (“Stay With Me”).
